Picture Purged
Hey,
I've been weighing up my options, and I was thinking I really need a trim at the back to even my hair out and make it look less of a mullet. I think I won't trim again if I have this one trim, but it's at that awkward stage where a trim might be handy. What do you all think, can you give me any advice?
What do I need to ask for, I was thinking of half an inch at the back, maybe an inch. Also does anyone think I should do something with the sides, as my hair appears to tilt upwards when my head is straight, and I know that is normal, but I want it to look less like that! I know common sense and to be absolutely specific to the hairdresser about how much I want trimmed off, but does anyone think I'd be over reacting if I took a ruler with me to show her EXACTLY how much I want trimmed. lol?
I've included a pic just to show the current state of my hair.
And I think that having trims will at least please people who say growing long hair without trims will look scruffy. If I can do that, I'll have everyone on my side I know about growing my hair. I'm probably contradicting myself here, about giving advice to people in the past but unsure myself now, but now it comes to the crunch, I need an expert opinion from you experienced gentlemen.
I've gotta' say it looks pretty good so far in the pictures and a trim might upset the balance of it.
dont trim it! it looks cool like that.. if anything, it's the popular style right now, so you'd probably "fit in" even better with your hair shaggy looking rather than the top long and bottom short.
Let it grow!
I'm about to talk out of both sides of my mouth on this.
First: with my younger clients (actors), I usually have them get trims regularly when they are growing their hair. It takes longer to get to the length we're aiming at, but it looks good all the time, and that's critical.
That said. Your hair looks good right now. If you were one of my clients, I wouldn't be insisting on a trim right now - although I wouldn't discourage it either.
That said, the usual cutter instructions are "Even it up, but don't take off any more than necessary." With a good, professional cutter, you'd have to look close to realize that it had just been cut.
No do not trim it. It is not even long enough to even think of trimming yet. Your Awkward stage is alot like mine was, and I was getting comments like I have a mullet, but truth is it is mostly almost all even. You British guys can shurely rock the Awkward stage unlike most ;) and You are rocking it very very well my friend. Just keep growing and you will see what I mean.
I got my first trim after most of it was past my shoulders... Worked fine for me. I'd still say yours is rather short, relative to where mine was when I thought about having it cut. Wait another couple of months. As I said before, you have healthy hair, it'll survive.
I had a trim early in my hair growing process. It was for the same reason you are considering: to even up the 'mullet'. The trim itself was quite good. It cleaned up the mullet in the back and I was generally happy with it even though the stylist cut the hair over my ears a little shorter than I would have liked. The net result was that my hair looked neat and tidy for a few weeks. In the process I lost about 1.25 inches (3.2cm) of hair in the back and an inch or so on the sides (about six weeks of growth). That was my one and only trim in the past two years. The question is "was it worth it". From a long-term hair length view it wasn't worth it. My mullet came back after a few weeks and stayed with me for the better part of a year. In other words, I gave myself an extra month or two in the awkward stage in return for a few weeks of good-looking hair. From another view it may well have made a huge difference. I got that trim because I was, at the moment, DISSATISFIED with the way my hair looked. In those early months I was having second thoughts about growing my hair. I felt I was starting to look unprofessional. The trim gave me some relief from the awkward stage and renewed my commitment to growing my hair. I may well have given up otherwise. So there you have it, two views of the same trim.
For some specific advice, you hair looks fine. You are in the awkward stage and will be for a year or so. A trim will prolong the awkward stage but if makes you happy with your hair it could be worthwhile in your situation. On the other hand, if you want long hair in the shortest possible time, just put up with your mullet for now. One thing, just make sure if you are considering a trim that it is something *you* want, not something another person wants for you. Good luck, and please let us know what you decide.
Wow your hair is reminiscent of the Beatles circa 1965 and looks quite cool to me. My advice is try to get through this without trims. Any trims just increase the duration of the awkward stage. Once your hair is past your shoulders you may want to go for a slight trim (maybe 1 inch) to even things up. Absalom
I havnt even read your post but im gonna say simply this. When I was at the same stage my hair looked just the same in fact I have a picture somewhere and everytime I see it I laugh my ass off because it looks terrible. But now two years later without one trim my hair is damn long and still growing and im very happy I havn't given in to a trim I advice you the same.
The shape of my head and the way in which my hair grows around it is similar to yours, albeit my hair is much finer and very messy. Aside from a slight trim in September 2003 for the purpose of job interviews, I've gone without any other cuts since May 2003, and it really isn't that bad. Maybe I'm not as worried about a 'mullet' as some people, but I've gone 13 months without even thinking about how my hair looks during the awkward stage. It didn't even cross my mind until I saw this board. It's just...one step on the way to longer hair. If I were you, I'd let go of any worries about your hair's appearance, and let it grow grow grow!
Matt.
I say nay on the trim. Your hair looks fine as it is. As the back grows longer (and more into the mullet you may fear), the top will grow at the same rate. It might look funky for a few months, but once your bangs get down to your chin it will look just fine.
I started my growth with the mentallity that an even all-around length looked best, but I've done a complete 180 and now prefer those few extra inches in the back.
Trim? No-way man. You have the beginnings of exceptional hair growth. It looks great the way it is now! Really...........just leave it alone and let it go wild for 2 years. Then all seems to have a way of looking great all by itself.
Your hair looks like it is suppose to look in the earlier stages and of course a "trim" will just set you back.
So often I read posts of other guys who got "trimmed" and regretted what happened to them vowing NEVER AGAIN! But then.......there ARE those who believe in it.
Oh well, so much for my opinion.
Take care
Surferdude NO you do not - you may feel it is getting untody as you get used to the sensation of longer hair towards your shoulders/neck but it looks OK.
Suggest you leave it for another twelve months until it is really getting to be something and then get it evened up by someone/stylist you can TRUST and have proof that he or she will not do what they think best rather than you want. By leaving it you will have something to work with and know how it grows.
Sure getting its trimmed now may make you feel better, well perhaps, but you will simply get back to this length.
Enjoy your first summer of hair freedom don't ruin it - your hair IS working for you.
If you do decide and only you can decide what to do with advice however strong make sure that whoever yuou choose knows how short half an inch is and do not let them cut and let them tell you 'oh well it really will look better'. It won't and YOU will be unhappy not them.
Wow, I'm shocked by the number of replies!
Thanks to all who replied, I've decided not to trim, and leave it at least until September before thinking again about it!. Thing is, I'm sort of going for the style Citizen Kane has. He told me he had the back trimmed, and now my hair back of my head is only slightly shorter than what he has. But I'll leave it grow until September and maybe get the back trimmed slightly. By then I should have another 3 inches and it will be much longer.
I was just feeling I needed to trim, because my sister is trying to convince me I'll have less chance of having a g/f by growing it long. Mind, she prejudices male longhairs saying most look like scruffy students. She isn't really supporting me that much now with my hair goals. I thought and she acted like it would be great, but turns out she's been biting her tongue all the time and now thinks I haven't got the face to pull the long haired look off, she says I have to look girly for long hair to look good! I think that is total bull!. I'm not the type to be put off by someone's comments, but I realized that a trim was now possible owing to the length on my hair.
So I come back to that age old question, does anyone think long hair will suit me???
Anyway, I truely thank you all for the replies, I've read every one and the responces seem to be positive. :)
YES it will - you just have to stand up for what you want and all but your sister support (just ignore her taunts). Doubts are natural but you have the makings of an awesome head of hair.
Just look at some of the early pics of others, they may create doubts probably in their owners if truth be known - but look at the finished products - Sorted and others. That WILL be you soon.
Hey dude, I think you realise by all the replies not to trim yet, but about the g/f... dont worry! I met my girlfriend right in the middle of my awkward stage. Actually until I started growing my hair I'd only ever been on a *date* with 1 girl, but my luck changed a lot ever since I stopped getting buzzed!! I think that girls "dig" long hair :-) Well you certainly get more attention!
~Gaz
Cool, that's good news! Same as you, I've only ever been on one date, but I've seen friends the ones who have grown their hair long have tremendous success! One guy had never even been on a date in his life, but in the last year, he's had about 9g/f's!
His luck definately changed. I know lots and lots of girls who dig long hair! Trouble is In my 6 form Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, Abertawe, (think you know what the Abertawe means) there are so few girls there, and next year there will be even less, only about4 girls are staying!!!! Makes me angry as hell so I may be moving to college.
Apologies If my hair looks greasy in that photo, I had just used 2 shampoo's and 2 conditioners. I used 1 shampoo, Aussie Mega, was fine at the beginning, ten I used one conditioner with extracts of cammomile. Big Mistake! Nearly burnt my eyes and skin, I reacted badly to it. So I ended up washing, shampooing and conditioning again using johnsons baby shampoo and Aussie Mega. So double conditioned nearly lol.
I had washed it about an hour before the pic was taken, I swear its not greasy, infact, most of the time It's actually quite dry my hair! Lol, I think I'll get off my stand now:)
Hi surferdude as i have said i was thinking of getting a trim, and i didnt, my hair once looked like yours but i would strongly advise you not to your hair looks fine as it is and anayway if you are growing your hair you want it as quick as posstble dont you??? so i would say dont do it for now just leave it and see what happens, only get a trim if your hair is a complete mess and from your pick it looks totaly fine !!
Good luck
surferdude...
Don't do it... Your hair is never gonna get long if you keep hacking at it...
