I see alot of posts on this board about people wanting or advice about trims. The best thing to do is not to worry about trims until your between shoulders and upper back. I know I said I want my hair atleast an inch from the ground, but if my terminal length don't go that far, I am not getting trims. Nothing is wrong with wanting trims, but most of you guys who want trims are in you awkward stage. You will not want a trim that early, and I advise you to keep growing until you are fully happy.
Your faithful Cherokee friend,
Dwayne :)
If other people want to go for trims, fine, maybe it'll work out for them. Me personally, I say 'screw taking a risk--forget trims.' Then again, as a university student most of the year, I don't need to worry quite as much about keeping it neat. My hair is very close to reaching my chin at this point, as far as the front is concerned.
I don't see why people bother with the trims in all honesty..im hearing alot of 'mullet' comments but even thats kind of twisted being as mullets were (crew cut?) on top and long in the back if im right. Surfers hair just looks like hes wearing an extrended football(american) helmet made out of hair! lol.
Yea, It looks horrible!!!!!! I'm not happy with it at all, If it wasn't summer, I'd wear my cap all the time to hide it, but sun hats never suit me for some reason, maybe cause the shape of my head!
I actually look forward to rainy days because it gives me an excuse to wear my cap when I'm out! :)
Horrible? NO WAY!
It looks great!!!!!!!!!!
I mean really, not even a years growth yet. Alas, most are hardest on themselves which is really too bad when growing out your hair. And, that is the only way to get there by puting in your time as with all of us.
But let it keep growing and before you know it you won't care if its a rainy or Sunny day. You will be absolutely amazed at what you will have attained at the 1 year mark. And by 2 years (or even before) you will find yourself suddenly in the drivers seat. It is well worth the wait the rewards are so great.
I don't like split ends, that's my reason.
Hi Dwayne, you are right. I have not had a trim in probably 8 years and my hair is doing fine for now. For safety reasons I may start trimming it if it gets past my knees since I ride a bicycle to stay fit. Absalom
Some people have to look 'corporate' (aka 'neat and tidy') for work, school, church, or social reasons. That is essentially why I got my one and only trim (work). Then I became my own boss and for the rest of the awkward stage it didn't matter. Like you, I am basically against trims but the reality is that in some cases a trim could be the difference between someone continuing with their hair growth or giving up.
It is my opionion that infrequent trims during the growing out process can keep the hair looking tidier and more styled, less unkempt. If someone is self-conscious, or desires/requires a more polished appearance, infrequent shape-up trims could save him (or her) from getting fed up with the awkward period and just chopping it all back off in frustration. This is one of the reasons women's hair rarely looks unkempt or damaged while growing out their hair, or wearing it long; they usually get trimmed up along the way.
Must admit I agree with Mary, though I stress the emphasis on "infrequent".
For many guys here growing their hair even a few inches longer is a big change in their personal style/lifestyle/worldview and some of them can't just stop the practice of cutting their hair cold turkey. A number of them you will see grow it a few inches and then just go right back to their accustomed short cuts or even farther back to a buzz cut...again and again. There can be a lot of psychology associated with this and you can see it in the amount of questioning and obsessing that goes on when what they really need to do is not worry about it and let it grow for at least a year...regardless of how it looks, because if you grow it out then it's never going to look like your short style again unless you go back and cut it off.
I get trims to get rid of wrecked ends and encourage others to do the same so their hair lasts longer and they become more aware of hair care, but agree that you don't need to get them for awhile when growing it from short styles (young hair).
Ok, just slowly put the scissors down and back up, everything will be alright.
Lol I will!
I'm growing my hair out trims or no trims, I decided that a long time ago.
I got trims every 8 weeks during the first 1.5 years. Now I get a trim every 12 weeks.
I don't understand guys who's only goal is length. Why would anyone want longer hair that doesn't look good?
You seldom see women with unkempt hair as they grow it out. Why? Because they get trims!
It all depends on what the person wants. But long, nasty looking hair is one of the things that gives men with long hair a bad name. I think if more guys with long hair would take care of their hair, society's attitudes might change.
awesome mane dude!!! How long ya been growing???

Hello Mick,
It looks like it is working for you, your hair is quite attractive.
Well, the two are not incompatible. There are people that want the look of uncut ends and the growing out look is the only way to go for the desired taper in time. I am also reminded of the question people sometimes get about "why have long hair if it is always in a ponytail?" The answer for both questions is that people can have long hair for different reasons, appearance is merely one of them.
Some do, but I'd say many women going for substantial length skip or at least reduce the frequency of trims just as the guys do. You might seldom see that untrimmed hair out and about on girls because it is not loose and visible. Buns hide a lot and men choose not to use that style option for the most part. I am also going to disagree here with the use of the word unkempt which connotes uncared for. Cutting hair is not the only way to care for it.
Yep. :-)
Eh, I am hesitant to believe people will change unfavorable attitudes toward long hair. People cling to stereotypes, it only takes a few people to make that generalization true to them no matter how overwhelming the amount of contradictory examples they see. At any rate, I believe people have the freedom to look however they want with no social obligation to represent the rest of their group. Also, there are still a lot of people out there that see the length itself on a man as the "nasty" factor and being freshly trimmed won't stop their shock at what they perceive as hair that is just plain wrong. Luckily they are in the minority. For society in general I would think people just haven't considered the matter beyond the assumption that long hair is for women and short hair is for men.

Mick: It's one thing once the hair is actually long, then they go for "substantial" length. But to not trim beginning from a short cut? I'll never understand.
Mick: I totally agree. There are many other ways to care for it besides not cutting. But there are a substantial number of longhaired guys who seem to choose "none of the above". I stand by my use of UNKEMPT, because so many longhaired men have UNKEMPT hair :-)
Mick: But currently, there are MANY more than just a few that fit the "stereotype". There are not the overwhelming numbers to contradict it. The only thing none conservative about me is my hair. Everything else about me is conservative (dress, politics, etc.). People tell me all the time that I "fool" them at first, just because of my hair. At the same time, I've been told that if more men took care of their hair like I do, that they believe attitudes would change.
So I guess there are other people out there that disagree with you on this point. I myself am a positive person and believe that intelligent people can change their views and opinions if given a chance. But of course, you can have any opinion you want ;-)
WOW!!!! Gorgeous Hair!!
Well to be honest, I don't think I've asked advice about trimming before, this is my first time, I'm not gonna cut it short, no matter what! This isn't upsetting me, I enjoy this forum, I enjoy talking to the people and I enjoy myself changing all the time, every month as my hair looks longer. When thinking to the days when I had hair no longer than about an inch, I would look the same, every week, month, and probably every year. But growing my hair keeps me looking different every month for the better and I like that:d
