Hello, my name is Matt, and Im new.
I am planing to grow my hair. My hair is short at the moment. Its only around 3 inches long if not less.
I want to grow my hair a little shorter then sholder lenth. But the ting is, I have really thick hair. My hair is streight with a little wave, but verry thick.
So I was wondering if I let it grow, and it looks like a ball of hair what shoudl I do?
I think I should go thin out my hair at a hairdressers (not cut it) every once in a while and then just keep it growing untill I get to my goal. But when I get to my goal that means I will still have to thin out my hair once in a while.
What should I do? Let my hair grow to my goal then thin it out or thin it out during the process of my goal?
Oh yes, here is a picture of me. With my current hair.

Welcome to the men's long hair board Matt. Now that I can see what your hair looks like I can give you better advice. The best thing to do is to let it grow without any trims or thinning for now. Growing long hair takes patience, since hair grows about 6 inches per year. In my opinion it would be best to grow it a little below your shoulders. This will give you the length you need to tie it back in a ponytail when necessary. This may take about 2 years. You want to have trouble free hair. Hair that is less than shoulder length is too short to tie back easily and much of it will not stay in the tail and will be troublesome. Drop by the board for advice from time to time, we are here to help. Best of luck, keep on growing it. Absalom
Matt,
Welcome to the board. If you're only interested in growing to your shoulders, then you open up a lot more options to work with. See, a lot of us here, myself included, are growing for very long lengths, so we want to minimize stand loss, damage, trims, etc. In your case, though, the saying "hair can take anything for two years" fits. Simply put, like most females, you can do whatever you want to your hair without having that much of a penalty.
What this means is that you will have it easier to achive the style you want. Why? Because you can do what girls do...pay someone money to give you the look that you *want*.
My advice for you is to grow your hair to your shoulders. This should take you another 12-18 months. Don't trim/thin it along the way. It may look horrible in your eyes, but it will be worth it in the end. Once you've got the desired length, go to a stylist and describe the look you want. They'll get you fixed up and you WILL be very satisfied. Best of luck!
Matt, you'll find there are many opinions as to the best way to grow out hair. My $.02: Since you really don't want very long hair, just about shoulder length, enlist the help of a competent stylist who can keep your hair in good shape and looking styled while you grow. Show a picture of your eventual goal to help the stylist. I think you'll be happier, and look tidier during the growing process, and since your goal is not really that far away, a few trims along the way won't appreciably lengthen the time it takes to reach your goal.
Welcome Matt.
Just let your hair grow for now untouched for at least 8-12 months. At that point you will be able to see just how your hair is when longer and what it is doing. Lots of your questions will be answered then just by observing. Most likely it won't have to be thinned at all. When long all falls into place automatically well it seems.
Good luck
