So I got some hair sticks to hold up my bun. I was a little concerned that they would look too 'femme' but it turns out that a website sells hair sticks with more subdued styling. The bonus page with details and pictures is given in the link below. What do you think?

Fantastic...............that is, enjoying and having great fun with Longhair. It is a blast!
1st we see the braided Ponytail and now this.
"Femme?" No way. You have really great hair and I am sure that you are not only happy with it but proud that you stuck it out and are now in the "fun stage." And really, what is the crime in enjoying Long Hair? I sure am enjoying mine!
I think that you've reached a point where your hair is more free and variable which allows you to experiment with more hairstyles with ease. Those chopsticks kick ass!
Tonez
Dang! I can barely put mine in a pony tail without it becoming completely tangled. I'm so envious of your hair! ::sigh::
Good Gosh Great Gollan !! Can you do NO wrong ?? Looks great !!
FANTASTIC !! No danger of you looking 'femme' with that beard !
Just an observation - the top left picture (i.e. full face where you look like a short haired guy) you look a great deal older than when you're in 'longhair' mode. What I mean is, long hair makes you look younger !
Awesome! I will definately try those out as soon as my hair reaches a respectable length!
You don't look femme at all lol, why do you think that?
It makes you look your own person, very individualistic.
I've not received comments of any kind but I've only been wearing them for a few days. At the bookstore today I caught a lady peeping around the corner at me. She smiled when we made eye contact. I really don't expect any comments. I live in one of the most liberal cities on earth (Ottawa, Canada). I've been wearing my hair in a *bun* for months now and never had a single comment. At this point I think wearing a bun is a bigger hurdle than the accessories for it. If you are comfortable wearing a bun in your town then adding hair sticks or other decorations to it is not going to change your comfort level or make you much more conspicuous.
I'm a bit surprised you haven't received any comments. I'm pretty far away from being able to try a bun at all, so I have no idea if I'll like it or not. I was just curious because of all the different accessories and styles I've tried or mentioned trying to friends/acquantances, the bun and hair sticks seemed to prompt the biggest response, and really the only negative response. I guess I'll find out in another 6 to 12 months!
Well, it's certainly a neat and unusal hairstyle
created with hairsticks!
Everyone's face is different, so many some could wear their
hair like that and others couldn't.
I think I would place myself in the group that could not.
But on you it looks fine.
Thanks to everyone for the encouragement. It is nice to be in the experimenting stage. For the record, my bun is 'two turns' (though that last half turn is mighty thin).
I want to clarify and expand my comment about looking 'femme'. Before I got the hair sticks I was concerned that they could make me look 'femme' (especially from the back). It is clear from the pictures that I do NOT look remotely feminine. Having a huge brow ridge is good for something!
Let me explain my goal with these experiments. There is no question that I am happy with being a male. I have no interest in looking female. However I *am* dissatisfied with the box I've been put in as a male. One of the reasons I grew my hair was to put an emphatic close on a lifetime of choosing either "tapered in the back and sides, #2 on top" or "high and tight". Now that I have long hair I sure don't want to jump back in another box of "ponytail" or "loose". This is why I'm experimenting.
Gollan - it is clear to me you are demonstrating something I have believed for a long time - Long Hair Styles are largely genderless. Why should you, or any of us jump into a box just cos soceity says so? Besides half the time we make our own boxes, because we're worried about what others will think.
Its great to see your photos, always inspiring and never "femme".
Sorted
I'll second that one. I tend to experiment a lot with hair, clothes, activities....almost everything. It seems like when seeing a new side of me, people often ask, "I thought you were a _______ (fill in the blank) type?" I simply tell people I am not a ______, or _______, or _______, simply, Dan.
I encourage all to keep being themselves, and not worry about types.
It looks VERY COOL!!! Awsome! Not feminine at all! I couldn't do that with my hair LOL
oh my gosh gollan!! man that is really awesome. i will admit, i first thought "um, probably gonna look a little too femme." but it just looks great.
i am really proud of you. i am a fan of the low braid look too...with your hair, it just looks fantastic.
keep it up!
