I put out my last cigarette on July 3rd, 2001, at 4:30pm. Before that, I smoked about 15-20 cigarettes a day for 2 years. I went cold turkey, and have been clean ever since. I use a program called SilkQuit to help keep track of my progress. Here are the current numbers:
Three years, 6 hours, 55 minutes and 10 seconds. 16444 cigarettes not smoked, saving $3,107.98. Life saved: 8 weeks, 1 day, 2 hours, 20 minutes.
My final motivation to quit was a picture of a cancer-infected lung I'd seen in a flyer from the American Cancer Association, that detailed the effects of smoking. Having a strong visual clue of what I was doing to myself gave me the strength and will-power I needed to quit, once and for all (I had tried twice before). I quit that same day.
If there are any here who smoke, are looking to quit, and would like some help, you can find a free copy of the program here:

FACT: 90% of the smoke and tar from one puff of a cigarette stays in your lungs. The remaining 10% is what you exhale.

Congratulations sir, a well marked anniversary. Funny enough today is also the anniversary of the founding of Willistown, about an hour from here, 300th anniversary and there was a parade and I got to march behind Miss Pennsylvania. A day of great anniversarys, Miss PA, three years since your last cigarette, looking closely at Miss PA...:D
Good work, Nyghtfall! I'm glad to see you standing against that. My grandmother died of lung cancer and so I'm glad to see you avoiding that same path. Keep up the good work!
Way to go! Fortunatly you quit, I get kinda sad cause I see so many people my age (25), including sibling, who do smoke, I just can't understand why so many people still do when they know just how bad it really is for you.
I am glad my parents didn't and that I never have.
Great Job Buddy. I know it must be a little hard not to pick another cig up, but think ahead in another 3 years :) Most people can't quit for that long and you are very strong for sticking it out. CONGRATS :) :) :) 3 smileys for you lol
congradulations dude! i know how hard it is to quit smoking, that nicotine sure is addictive, i'm glad for you
you must be enjoying some better health and dont have to worry as much about the typical cancers that smokers get
Quiting smoking is actually very easy. I should know, I've done it about 7 or 8 times! lol
Yeah, quitting is simple. Staying off is the difficult part.
;D
Congratulations ! Cigarettes are the next (and final) addiction I have to tackle. You're an inspiration !!
BTW I'm 4 years 10 months without alcohol and 4 years 8 months without cannabis resin.
Nyghtfall! That's absolutely fantastic, don't you feel a lot healthier now!?! What I do is go down the beach in shorts with my skimboard, and just take a deep breath of the ocean air, and thank myself for not giving into smoking, which many of my friends have unfortunately starting smoking. I have had one puff or drag of a cigar ever, never touched ciggarettes, I hated the feeling of smoke inside my lungs, I didn't feel cool or relaxed or happy at all, it was quite upsetting actually!
Keep of the nicotine products, don't give the large corporations your money, they are out to steal your money, your life and kill you.
COongratulations for giving up smoking!!!
Congratulations!
It takes a lot of metal to quit smoking.
I wish my Dad would find similiar will power. He's 58 years old and is probably gonna die in the next 5 years because his cardiovascular system is so shot. His lungs are weaking too, it wakes up every morning hacking up tar, mucus and blood from his lungs. He constantly interrupts conversation with loud coughing fits, and he worries my Mom something chronic.
With this kinda example, I'm unlikely to ever start smoking. I'm pleased you managed to quit before you did yourself any lasting damage. Incidentally, what are you going to spend the $3000 you've saved on? ;-)
Sorted
I actually haven't set any of that money aside. The dollar amount simply reflects how much money I HAVEN'T spent on cigarettes.
I didn't think you had, it was a flip remark.
just plain SUCKS!
I actually like the smell of pot (never smoked it) but I can think of no more foul smell than tobacco smoke.
From what I heard, you don't even get high off it. It just manages to give you cancer, waste your money, offend others and stink up a wide area.
Actually, you do. It's why cigarettes are so addictive. You get very high, as the nicotine tricks the part of the brain that controls feelings of euphoria. As the feeling begins to disipate, your brain craves more, prompting the smoker to inhale more, and eventually light up again. It's also why many smokers eventually wind up going from just one cigarette a day to several packs a day. The have to struggle just to keep themselves in check, while maintaining that feeling of walking on air at the same time.
