I have heard this rumor for years that pot increases hair growth. This makes sense to me seeing as how I am a regular user, and my hair has grew 7 and a half inches in just 9 months.
PS. Lets try not to make this thread turn into pro drugs vs anti drugs.
woops, didnt mean to put that pic in there, my bad.
I've never smoked pot, but I'm wondering if hair grows slower as you get older. I'm 49 and I've been regrowing my hair from a shortish back and sides for 2 years 8 months. It's shoulder-length now, but doesn't seem to be getting any longer. Apart from one minor split-end trim a few months ago, it hasn't been cut at all. I reckon my hair grows 4 inches a year at most.
But I must look on the bright side - I'm lucky enough to still have a full head of hair at 49 and the invasion of greyness is only in the early stages.
Cheers, Barry

Lol, I haven't heard this before but you may have just influenced a lot of slow hair growers to try pot.
I tried pot a couple of times and never liked it. I guess because I am a strong-minded individual. I don't really believe it increases hairgrowth. Afterall, it kills Brain Cells. (No offense to my Pothead friends) "Jesse" lol, man I miss my friend Jesse. He was a good guy with longhair (Eventhough he cut it shorter, but never cut it "Short")
I know guys with long hair are typically the most likely to smoke it, but I'm not aware of any chemical reaction with the body that stimulates hair growth. I think what you've heard is more myth than fact, and that the growth you've experienced is simply indicative of your natural ability to grow hair faster than the average male.
While I am not opposed to people smoking pot, I am inclined to believe smoking pot if anything would decrease hair growth rate. Smoking pot or tobacco for that matter decreases the amount of oxygen that gets to every cell in your body. Less oxygen = slower cell growth, including the cells in hair follicles.
On the other hand if you exercise strenuously you should get faster (and better) hair growth due to increased oxygen getting to your cells. I do a lot of strenuous exercise and I don't smoke anything. Click on my photo, I'll let you decide. Absalom
Everytime you post something, your more of an Influence to me :) I don't smoke anything either. It's bad for you, and especially your Brain Cells. I wish my Mom would stop smoking cigs, because I have to inhale that crap, and It makes my clothes stink :(
Hi Dwayne, I can remember what that was like. My mother smoked 2 packs per day and the second hand smoke was a real problem for me too. Absalom
well I for one certainly hope that rumor is true, if ya know what i mean :-) hehe
Well, I don't know about smoking causing hair to grow faster... it really is most likely nonsense. However, my hair has grown 6 inches in 6 months and I smoke pot.
Just wanted to add something here - mostly for the benefit of insane dwayne. Smoking does not make a person weak-minded. Some of the smartest and head-strong people I know smoke. Smoking is more an indicator of personality traits such as degrees of dependancy.
I resent the implication that smokers are somehow not as intelligent as non-smokers and in fact I would suggest that people who make stereotypical statements or judge people based on something so simple are most likely to have a smaller mindset than the targets themselves...
Just re-read that and it might sound a little harsh - I don't want to sound like I'm getting back at you - I guess it's easy to say something that offends without realising.
Apologies for the semi-rant.
Peace.

You need to help me meet some of these smart Potheads, because all of my Pothead friends are total dumbasses :) No offense you guys, just offending my friends hehe lol
Good response...probably the best of the lot. Some of us with dependent personalities are looked upon as not-in-control but in reality we're equal to anyone but with a different drum beat of sorts. Again, bro, well put. (As always I look forward to your comments.) Josh
Great point. I know what you mean. I go to a school that is, in simple terms, very left-wing. About 50% of students are frequent pot smokers and many have long hair. But ya, the funny thing is that we're known nationally as being a very strong academic school and full of intellectuals.
Maybe an intelligent mind helps you manage your substance use better?
Intelligence certainly can help you recognise your limits and stick to them, someone who's smart won't get themselves wasted right before they need to do something important. Smart people tend to think about consequences, that's what different's them from the average dumbass.
I doubt your hair has grown that fast and for certain it won't grow faster because of pot.
It's a misconception from the 70's when pot and longhair went hand and hand.
That is what I first thought when I heard the rumor, it was probably used as a scare tactic that long haired guys smoked it.
But in all honesty, my hair has grown as fast as I said it has, but its probably not because of weed.
Tommy, I did an internet search after reading this thread, just out of my own curiosity, and this is what I found:
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=360489
If you go there, read through the whole thread. There is both some scientific evidence, and various people telling their stories. What it all points to is just the opposite of what you are interested in--that marijuana use may actually cause an increase in hair LOSS.
And this makes sense, when you read the scientific end. Both marijuana and excessive aclohol use have been shown to cause hair loss because of the effects on the liver.
Also, and this has been around for a long time, marijuana causes an elevation in estradiol, a hormone, in men which apparently affects the tesosterone levels as well. These hormones play a tricky balance in men and women (both men and women have male and female hormones in varying balances),and when the balance is interferred with many things begin to happen. Hair loss is one of them. Sperm production, sexual function and the growth of breasts in men are some of the other effects.
It's worth a read.

A friend turned me on to pot about 9 months ago. I used to be so anti-pot. I don't even smoke cigarettes, so the thought of doing a joint made me ill. Then I discovered bongs. I've been extremely happy ever since, and the hair's just growing like mad!
Cheers~

I've never been a regular smoker of pot, though I have numerous times and many of my friends have smoked daily since their early teens. I'm in no way opposed to recreational drug use though personally these days I try to avoid it.
I have a naturally depressive mentality, I have suffered badly from depression and consequently I'm more likely to suffer again in the future. I can't think of one recreational drug which doesn't present a mental health risk to people who have depressive tendancies.
I guess this one is going out to the people who have described feeling depressed who also think smoking weed is a good idea. Its NOT!
If you have skin cancer - you don't sit in the sun. If you have liver damage, you don't drink a bottle of vodka - If your depressed you don't smoke pot!
As to the original question, does smoking pot make your hair grow faster... I think Absalom hit the nail on the head, it would more likely do the opposite.
I guess we could try a little experiment with the regular pot smokers. Quit smoking pot for a couple of months and see if your hair grows faster? Any takers?
I doubt it. My hair has grown 6 inches in 7 months and I've never smoked pot in my life. I just exercise a lot. If you want faster growth, you've got to escape from the computer chair and do some walking, resistance walking is better like running up sand hills.
HOw long was your hair when you had your last haircut and first began to grow it?
All I will say is my brother appears to be a regular user and his hair grows amazingly slow. I will not say much politics wise as I know I will be attacked again but I think doing drugs is a really dumb idea because it can really f' you up.
We agree on something Marc !
I can tell you from personal experience it doesn't. I did
some in the 70s, noticed absolutely no difference in hair
length.
An opportunity cost theory may explain longer hair and pot: if money is spent on pot instead of haircuts, then the pot smoker's hair would certainly get longer faster!
But there are risks to you and your hair. If you live in an area where pot use is persecuted, the risk of going to jail may result in a haircut because some jails require men to get haircuts. And another risk, smoking may cause lung cancer which would shorten life and therefore less time to grow hair long, and the chemotherapy may make hair fall out.
As far as the rate of hair growth, I doubt smoking pot would make much of a difference--it is not worth the risks to try it. The time and money would be better spent taking care of yourself and your hair.
