Just thought I'd share with everyone one of my recent discoveries...
Psycroptic - The Scepter of the Ancients
Possibly the most talented and technical death metal that I have ever heard. These guys are from Tasmania and are all under 25!
Taken from one of their songs:
waves of hair it crashes -
onto a grindingshore....valour....
We all fear the day a time we hope will be years away
Inspection of reflection, recession of hair assaults vision
A balding crown, it meets your eye
screams ring out as you face the sky
Only those, who did choose, to grow their locks
Have this maniacal type trepidation.
And a few other CDs I'd reccomends are:
Sinners Bleed - From Womb to Tomb
Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt
Severed Savior - Brutality is Law
Disillusion - Back to the Times of Splendor
Looks awesome, I'll be sure to check it out.
Listening to Children of Bodom for the mean time.
Children of Bodom is one of my fav melodic death bands Alexi is an amazing guitarist.
Heh for some sort of reason I cant seem to like Children Of Bodom. The only song I like is Angels Dont Kill. I heard at least a dozen more but found nothing appealing...
Ya alot of people find the keyboards to dominating but I enjoy it because its different. If there were any other bands that used the keyboards in the same way they do I probably wouldnt be interested its bodom's thing and I think they combine them flawlessly with Alexi's sweeping.
CoB's first 3 albums were good, their new album is horrible.
Lemme get this straight... a Death Metal band has produced a song about hair????
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heheheheehahahaahahhahohoohoohoohohohoho!!!!!!!!!!!
Stop! Oh, it hurts! My pancreas!!
LOL!!!!!!!!!!
That is kinda stupid for a Death Metal group. I love the art though, and I am in to art myself, but all Death and Black Metal groups are suppose to be about something mor conterversial than hair. I have a few songs about hair that I wrote, but if I was a Death Metal Artist, I wouldn't even mention it. Not to embarass you or anything, but Nyghtfall has the room to laugh. I am probably going to laugh myself lol
Nah, not really. While hair may be a somewhat odd topic for lyrics, the majority of death metal bands produce serious lyrics; about mythology, nature, Gods etc etc. Pretty much the only bands that write controversial lyrics are those who have a gimmick and set out to either shock (Libido Airbag, Necrobestiality), or hold cult status (like Cannibal Corpse with their cheesy gore songs).
Bands like Decapitated are pretty serious about their art, and they study music at school, which shows in their technicality and precision of playing. Which reminds me - Redleader, when they started out, they were aged between 14-17 and performing songs like Nine Steps and The Eye Of Horus. Even when their first album came out, the drummer was still 16. As of now, I believe they are aged between 20 (drummer) and 23 (vocalist).
Sorry for rambling, I always get over excited on the topic of their age.
As regards to the song, I second those fears. I don't know what I'd do if I were to lose my hair. I'd probably grow whatever remained as long as it could grow.
Matt.
There really is no set topic for a death metal band to sing about the style refers to the style of drumming the guitar riffs and the type of vocals not the lyrics.
As I said to Nyghtfall, who are we to say what is 'supposed to be' and the contrary?
A genre of metal is based on the music, not the lyrics. There's no special type of lyrics for any type of genre, especially in death metal. In death metal you could have bands such as Cannibal Corpse which sing about death and mutilation and whatnot. Then you have the anti-christian Deicide. And then all the sudden you have a band called Stump that sing about feces...
Ya, so it isn't the typical death metal lyric. So what? It was just about a tenth of one of their songs (the rest of that song, along with the rest of the album, has much deeper/controversial, more typical death metalish lyrics). I'd hate for us of all groups of people to laugh at something because it isn't mainstream (within its realm).
Give them a listen. I can assure you that they aren't some 'nu-metal' band making cheesy rebellious lyrics.
Sorry to diss your new favorite band, but Death/Doom/Black Metal has never been my cup of tea. I'll agree that many of those bands have some incredible technical chops, but until their vocalists stop sounding like Darth Vader with throat cancer and actually start singing for a change, I'll never enjoy that genre of music. The music sounds beautiful until the growling begins, and then every band sounds the same. Alas, growling is synonimous with that genre of music, so I'm pretty much SOL.
As for the lyric, puh-lease... I'd more expect that level of writing from Spinal Tap, nevermind whether or not it's mainstream for Death Metal.
Death Metal generally invokes images of impending doom and a fascination with the macabre into a dark world. It builds upon what speed metal and grindcore have already established: an apocalyptic epic where the only future is decay. When a Death Metal band writes a lyric about hair, the resulting listening experience can be nothing but comical.
I just did, for all of about 30 seconds, to be fair in my reply to your invite. Again, I'm sorry, but I think their music is shyte. But I'm glad you enjoy them. That's all that matters.
Ah, well I guess we've got different focuses in the metal genre, my friend. I know the vocals are the biggest thing to adjust to when getting into death/black metal. If they're not your thing, it's really hard to develop a taste for them.
Thanks for at least giving the band a listen.
Lol If you want to hear some weird non growl but still strange vocals, check out White Skull! Good songs are Tales from the north, Asgard, Devil's woman is AWESOME!!! I definately urge you to download that song.
Thanks im always looking for new death metal bands I will definetly check it out.
thanks dude i'll have to check it out!

Cool to see another fan of these guys. I've had the album for a little while and it's indeed very technical stuff. I like a lot of stuff from their record label-www.uniqueleader.com, but warning to those who are easily offended, there's a lot of stuff that might be offensive to easily offended people. Although the album in question doesn't go for shock value, it's just killer technical stuff. Too bad they'll probably never be able tour outside of Australia, but that MIGHT change if they pick up a bit more momentum! Other bands that are extremely technical, but not at the record label above are Gory Blister (Italy) and Necrophagist (Germany), and Martyr (Quebec, Canada)
Nice. I've heard Gory Blister and Node (another Italian band with members from Gory Blister) and Necrophagist and they are all quite good. I'll have to check out the Canadian Martyr.
I havent heard of these guys. I'll be sure to check them out.
But from all the different bands I've heard, I've come to the conclusion that Gorguts is the greatest technical death metal band and they get a nice #5 spot on my top 5 bands list. If you love metal, you HAVE to check out the album Obscura. Its amazing. It's thousands of weird squeels, whammy dives, etc that you probably didnt think that a guitar could produce and its all put together nicely to form melody. A shame the drummer killed himself and these guys probably wont do another album...
Ya I am a fan of Gorguts. Obscura is a great technical album. Technical in a different way than the band I posted about (Psycroptic),though. One thing I give Gorguts props for is the instrumental track they seem to put on all of their albums.
I like all forms of metal from prog, power, folk, grind, gore, death, black, thrash
only a few fav bands are Ancient rites, Thryfing, finntroll, anthrax, carcass, arsis, inhume, exhumed, leng tch'e, rompeprop, death angel, Melechesh, Sigh, Evergrey, Dream theater, Pain of salvation, Edguy, Iron maiden, AC/DC, Impaled, Aborted, gorerotted, Circle of dead children, testament, exodus, machine head, marduk, zyklon, agalloch, morgion, emperor, mayhem, and so many more..
