I've been following the board for a year but have not posted until now. I can't get over how helpful and nice everyone is around here. No one has anything bad to say to anybody. That's rare fot an internet forum... Well anyway...
I've tried 3X's to grow my hair out but I get it cut when it becomes awkward. The length that it is at now is the longest it has ever been, (It touches the tip of my nose) and im sporting quite the shag because my hair is so thick and straight. I think this time I'll just get the sides and the back cut and leave the bangs alone...

Welcome to the board! Its nice to see you finally post, we're always need fresh faces and ideas.
As to your question - I hate to give advice without seeing the evidence. But if you want to trim your way through the awkward stages, then yeah - just trimming the back and sides, leaving the top well alone is the best way to do it. Just don't trim too short otherwise dependent on how long your hair is, you'll get a mushroom look.
The fact is though, we are often our own worst critics and if you have straight hair, then chances are, you're hair will look pretty good even if its left completely untouched. If you can post a picture, you can probably get some more specific advice.
