In my experince, it seems that anyone I know well either loves or hates my hair... there are very few of them who would say, "It's just your hair - it's you I'm friends with." or something to that effect.
Anyone have any idea why people feel so strongly towards long hair?
By the way, I found a good way to keep my mum off my back - might work for any of you guys who have that same problem - I just told her that I want to see what it looks like at shoulder length, and that if I decide I don't like it, I'll let her shave it herself.
That seemed to put a smile on her face, and it's good cos she knows there may be a limit to how long I'll be growing for. On that topic, I'm getting really depressed... it's taking so long and I don't even know if I'll like it or if it'll be comfortable and suited to my lifestyle.
Ah well...
all the best,
wolfeyes
Since you are in the Awkward Stage, people are going to hate on your hair, but as your hair grows more each day, less people hate it. When I was in my Awkward stage, that is all I would hear is "Dwayne, go cut your HAIR" but you know what I told them "Hell No, go cut yours" (Mostly refering to girls about the go cut yours part) Don't worry about it though, I didn't give a rats ass what they though, and now they enjoy my hair :) Just stick it out, and less people will hate your hair. I happen to think your hair looks very nice though, and you shoudn't care (But deep down inside of all of us longhairs, the awkward stage insults did bother us)
Thanks for the support man, and the encouragement. Wish I could spin the clock round and reach your length by the morning.
I have given up on caring what I look like - my girlfriend still finds me attractive and that's all I care about so I'm quite happy looking like sh** now :)
thanks again.

You could dedicate a pyschology Post Grad study to answer that one. My guess is that because humans are natural control freaks, since biblical times we have sought to control others and stamp our mark on them, making them more like us, destroying other cultures and imposing our own. Personal appearance is just one of the things we have control freakery about. We'll get over it though, just as we are getting over our desire to control people's religous beliefs and sexual preferences. It just takes time.
Hang in there buddy, these things take time, don't let it get you down. Every set of photos you have posted have looked better and better, there is no doubt in my mind that having hair suits you. You shouldn't focus on whether or not you'll like your hair when you reach your goal, afterall, its a no brainer... if you get to shoulder length and realise you hate it, you can shave it off in 20 minutes.
Think about it like this: if you see this through until you reach your goal, at least you'll have no regrets about not trying. At least you'll be able to know for yourself that you gave it a go, even if it turns out not to be for you.
Once again, words of wisdom from a true hair guru.
You're right... I'm just an impatient person by nature, but I'm not going to quit this time. It's almost as much a test of my dedication to myself as anything else.
Thanks man.

Exactly. Growing your hair out is as much about personal dedication and determination as it is about actually growing the hair. Its a hell of a challenge and certainly something I think you are made for.
I'm sorry to hear that, Wolfeyes. May I ask you: How much effort really does go into your routine? Like, what exactly do you do for it to keep it in the shape you want it to be in, and, if you didn't do all this work, would it really be that bad?
My reason for asking is that you seem to have some of the most magnificent hair I have ever seen(from your photos), and I can't imagine it really looking that bad. So I was just wondering, if on the days you took your pics, were they like "really good hair days" or is that how it always looks?
Anyway, let me know and I'll see if I can offer any advice. best of luck.
I do try to look my best for the pictures... but that's mostly concentrating on not having a vacant expression on my face. My hair's pretty much like that all the time, and thanks for the compliment!
It's obviously more time-consuming than really short hair - I love the way washing ahort hair takes no more and a minute, and it's dry about 5 mins after a shower.
I miss that, and sometimes I have to hair-dry around the back and sides cos too much exposure to water makes my eczema flare a bit.

Well if that's the way your hair always looks, then I definitely don't think you have anything to worry about! It just looks quite shiny and healthy. Seriously bro, your hair looks like it could rival the quality of Tom Cruise, and he spends thousands on his hair every year. So consider yourself in good luck!
Man I would love to rival his hair... I'll make that my aim LOL.
Thanks again :)

Hmmm... I clicked on the response to my "Suave" thread but the reply I got was for my talk with Wolfeyes!
Can anyone see what Insane Dwayne wrote to me?
I know exactly what you mean related to this. I to miss the quick washing of the scalp when i had a buzz or a ceasar cut and you were in and out of the shower in a flash. Now I actually have to plan my showers around when im going out or what im doing. My hair usually takes close to two hours to dry all the way and im oppose to blow drying so it really can be quite a hassel.
I suggest you use a shower cap when you are in a hurry. I shower every day but only wash my hair every three or four days. On the days I don't wash my hair I wear a shower cap. It takes no more time than short hair. Good luck with your hair length goals.
I need to wash my hair everyday with conditionar or at the least every second day or the oil buildup gets terribly greasy thanks for the suggestion though.
Hey Bro, trust me, you are not alone. But I have pasted below a poem from the American, Robert Frost. If you don't want to read it all, then just scan the last three lines. This has been my mantra through so many "why am I different" moments in my life. I honestly feel that most mortals really want to be expressive but haven't the courage or whatever else it takes to be themselves. They travel the road most taken. But you, bro, and I and many others have the courage to take the road less traveled, and most of the time, it makes all the difference. Trust me, you are not alone in this on-going challenge. Josh
THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Man, I've read Robert Frost poems, but not since school - that's a lovely poem, and thanks for sharing it. It's nice to know you're not alone, but better to know that people care that you feel that way.
I appreciate it.

There are some people and their emotions I can't relate to because I've not walked in their shoes. But yours, man, I walk in every day---and I think most of the guys here on the Board are with me on that--with us in that. Whether you eventually cut it, trim it or leave it, never would I "cast the first stone" man. Never. Have a great morning..or evening...or what ever the time is there. Josh (5 PM here in Denver)
Man, you're cool. Thanks :)

Isn't life kinda crazy, here you are with one of the most admired manes on the board and your down on it. What's wrong with this picture. You're a champion in your own right and I know you have the will power to keep up the fantastic job. You've set a goal and now the challenge is keeping to it. Like Sorted said, if you get to the desired length and absolutely hate it, the clippers are just quick click away.
I have done many tranformation cuts and it's always sad to the journey come to an end, especially after shaping and watching the creation grow over time. Every ending starts a new beginning, but we should always try to rush to the finish line. Let the turtle be your new mascot.
Which reminds of a joke:
What did the snail say, while riding on the back of a turtle?
WEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
Kinda puts things in perspective. Hope this put a smile on your face. Thanks for sharing the great photos of your mop.

ok so I went back and filled in the words I forgot to say. Don't you hate when your brain goes faster than your typing fingers? Cheers.

A lot of older men 50+ will hate you for your long mane because while they can't get much hair to grow, you got tons of it.
If I ever become balding what little hair I have will stay long. Hey after I'm 50 I'm not trying to make a fashion statement.
