I do not understand why people seem to get so high by puting other people down... Yesterday i went to a fourth of july party, just wanted to have a good time.... enjoy myself....eat some good food.. This was over my fathers house, the whole time i seemed to get insults thrown at me every second.. Simply becouse my hair is long... I mean i understand people dont agree with long hair for a guy... But why the heck do people have to insult people with long hair? What gets them off bringing other people down? And the even more annoying thing is i always hear them say "oh you should cut it, you look so much better with your hair cut and girls would dig you more" Meanwhile my whole life i had short hair and women didnt even give me a passing glance, now with long hair they are showign attention.... Sorry for my rant, its just some people are really shallow and it annoys the heck out of me.....

My 4th of July was no good either. You see I got into my first car accident. I was going down this hill 50MPH, my grandma and I going for a 2 hour trip to her brothers. 10 minutes from the place as we go down this hill I put the brakes on early enough and firmly enough but the car wasn't stopping, put the brakes down all the way to the floor and the car didn't stop. Got down to 15MPH but it didn't stop. I didn't hear the crash it's self and saw my grandma's airbag go out in slow motion and then for two seconds I don't remember anything, very odd but then I remember the powder from the airbags was everywhere, very hot and we were basically coughing and gagging on it. The horn pops on and it wouldn't stop for twenty minutes untill the cop finally disconected the battery. All I could do was appologise to the other people who were very kind and understanding and call 911 and call my mom and freak her out. Everybody in the other car was fine and Grandma's knee got a whopper of a bruise and on her arm she got a small cut, nothing horrible. A very crappy day. Only positive was I got to ride with grandma in the back of a police car like criminals because the cop took us to our destination. Had to wait three hours for my mom even though it's a 2 hour trip. Why three? She had to take an hour and calm down. So we're waiting for the insurance people to go do stuff and find out what the hell happened with the brakes. I mean unless you're straight up and down when you put the brakes down all the way the car is supposed to screach to a halt. I didn't use the parking brake because it's the pedal kind and thus hard to reach within the two seconds I realized that something wasn't right.
woah man, i'm sorry to hear that happened, thank God your ok though

My friend was taking a break in a small village with some friends, and on their first day there, the group was driving along a small road. They noticed a woman turning out of a corner and driving towards them, but expected her to line up with the road and get on the right side. They could see she wasn't paying attention though, so they stopped dead in their tracks while this woman carried on driving obliviously and crashed head on at about 20MPH. She wondered where their car had come from, although it was in her direct line of sight for about 10 seconds.
The idiocy! Some people just shouldn't be anywhere near a car.
I was in an accident too, a few years back. The airbag went off
but my head hit the side window and I got a bump on my head.
Must have suffered a concussion because they told me I
was walking into walls all day...and I don't remeber it at all.
Next day I was okay, though.
Too bad your brakes didn't work. No worse feeling then when
you are not in control of the vehicle you are driving.
Glad no one was seriously injured.
Hope they understand that it was the car's fault
or they will never want to ride with you again!
Being a little different makes people notice you, and some people just can't cope with anybody that doesn't fit into their cosy little world. Don't let it worry you.
The fact that they annoyed you enough to rant about it, means they have accomplished what they wanted. If you let their needling get to you, then they've won.
It seems like your telling him to just sit here and take it? Do you have any suggestions?
Verbal harassment of people in the USA is very common. It happens to many people--but I guess some people never experience it. It happens in many situations other than family gatherings and over many things other than hair. I think a lot of the verbal harassment is encouraged by the commercial mass media to stimulate the sale of clothes and other personal items.
No, on the contrary! I am telling him he needs to change his natural tendency to be upset by it. Once he can get past the "why are they picking on me?" train of thought and into "You guys are pathetic" train of thought, then he can respond rather than react. He cannot rise above them as long as he is "hurt" by them.
In a party situation, when someone you know mentions the hair, I wonder if it would help to ask what kind of hair styles they like and discussing why. Talking and comparing preferences of what individuals like may reduce tensions and promote tolerance of more types of hair styles. About friends and relatives criticizing long hair, the talk about hair would become less frequent once they get used to you having long hair. It's when someone suddenly has a new hair style that it seems everyone wants to say something about it.
