Because I find it difficult to tie my hair into a hair elastic without damaging some of it in the process, I usually tie my hair back with a ribbon when I want to keep it restrained. Thing is, the ribbons I use tend to come undone over sessions of prolonged activity. Since I would like to move about without having to worry about restraining my hair, I would like to braid my hair. Thing is, I'm clueless as to how to go about it. Would any of y'all mind offering me some help? If you'd be so kind as to answer, please provide directions that are as simple and clear.
The simplest way to braid your hair is to have someone else do it for you. Trust me on this. It's too stressful on the arms to do it yourself. I don't know how Gollan does it without killing his arms.
I'm no braiding expert, but its more than possible to do it yourself and there are plenty of picture guides on the web to show you how, but I'm damned if I can remember the URL's. :-(
Its also much easier to show someone than write directions but nevertheless, here's my attempt at instructions for a simple braid.
1) Split the hair to 3 equal sections from left to right, hold them apart between your fingers.
2) Take the left-most section and place it between the other two sections.
3) Then Take the right-most section and place it between the other two sections..
4) Repeat steps 2 & 3 until you've ran out of hair. tie with a hair tie. (Not an elastic band.)
At first its easier to practice on a small segment of hair and its easiest to get good results whilst practicing if your hair is damp. Though if you braid all your hair whilst wet it takes ages to dry out, so this is only really a practice technique.
Its tricky and I have by no means mastered it. But this is how I've practiced.

Heres a site someone once poster here, and it did the trick for me. Regular braiding your own hair is easy with a little bit of practice and patience, patience being the key factor, Ive been braiding my hair when I go to bed now for almost a year and its really helped keep tangles out. But french braiding your own hair, now thats a challenge! Ive been successful at it once or twice. anyways here the url:

Another great thing for holding hair back are these new ties I found called bunjiis, you should check them out, they work very well:

It's easy enough once you get the hang of it. You divide your hair into three equal parts first. Actually, I suggest you comb it or otherwise detangle it before you divide it. Then you alternately bring each side across into the middle, i.e. you bring the left side into the middle, then the right, then the left, the right, etc.
As you get further down your hair it will put more strain on your arms, but there is an easy way around that. As soon as you are far enough down to bring it around to the front, then do so. Hold it carefully as you do that so it doesn't come undone, and try not to get confused as to which side is which. Then just carry on plaiting your hair with it pulled forward over your shoulder.
Then you just have to tie the end with a hairband and you are done, but even if you don't it will usually take a long time to unravel. Have fun!
