Hi,
Somebody I spoke with about trying to grow my curly hair out suggested that I try "layering by cutting it" to make it look straighter or more styled. I don't understand how this works; could somebody explain?
Thanks,
Rick
Layering will help to "shape" your hair, but it will not make it appear straighter, and it will make it take longer until you can pull it all back in a ponytail. I have had many people suggest to me that I get it cut into layers, but I'm happy with it now where it is, and can't imagine having to wait even LONGER for it to get to this length (I'm about 1 year 9 months). An old aquaintance of mine with curly hair did get his layered, and honestly, I couldn't tell that much difference except that he had lost several inches in places.
Just be patient, it WILL get longer, though we curly hairs have the tougher row to hoe.
Hang in there!

Rick, for us guys with wavy or curly hair, the length of your hair will eventually pull a lot of the curl out. But if you layer your hair you are creating different lengths of hair all over your head, with much of it cut shorter as it lays on top of "layers" of longer hair. The shorter hair will curl up, guaranteed. I live in a fairly dry climate (Denver area, 6000 ft on my front porch), so I have the waves but not the curls here. But I haven't lived here all my life, and on the Gulf Coast, with layered hair, I had a mess on my hands. So don't cut it. Just let it get longer and that length will pull most of the curl / waves out. Josh
I'll have to put in a strong vote against layers. I've seen it done, and just like Ball Buy said, it doesn't look all that different, but your left with much shorter strands that do not fit in a tail.
I think it can help tame down a lot of shorter hair styles, and that is what many stylist have in mind when they suggest this. They're thinking about the hair they are looking at now as oppossed to the long hair you are trying to grow.
