I would first like to say I am very glad to be here. Ok, now here is my dilema. My hair is incredibly thick, wavy and dry. What could I do to thin it out without layering or undercutting etc? And what is a good way restore moisture to the hair?
here is a pic
First, welcome!
I have thick, dry hair as well, and the Jason Naturals Damage Control shampoo and conditioner have worked well for me, as has jojoba oil. I also only shampoo every three or four days, which helps tremendously.
By the way, your hair looks great in the pic.
Cheers,

I thank all of you for the replys. My goal length is undetermined as of now. Possibly 6-8 inches past the shoulders.
Hey man, do what I do: see a pro stylist for advice, products, care tips, etc. I live in a dry climate (Denver) but still struggle with the waves and, on those few rain days, some curl at the tips. Thanks to a stylist, I use products that reduce both wave and curl and give it a lot of moisture too. I know the guys on this Hyperboard have lots of experience experimenting with things, and many have been successful too. Not me. I run to the pros if I have a problem. That's what I'd recommend. Be sure they keep their scissors away from your head though. That's my advice. You can screw up your hair bad if you don't get the right advice man.
Given the reason for the existence of this board, your "incredibly thick, wavy" hair can only be considered AWESOME, not a dilema. "To thin it out" shouldn't even be a consideration because layering and/or undercutting are your only options. Either of those actions, in my opinion, will ruin/undo what you have so painstakingly grown up till now. The dryness (a true problem) can be corrected by cleaning and conditioning with quality products.
It's always been hard for me to understand why anyone would want to thin their hair.

You should use conditioner, trust me, I am another thick wavy dry haired guy. I use Suave, and that works very great for my hair, and it gives my hair a super smooth soft clean feeling. Try some Suave, and I highly suggest the women's version, since it is for long hair.
Welcome Jeremy, Your hair looks great. My advice to you for the dryness is to use a moisturizing shampoo and some type of moisturizing conditioner as well. The best cure for waves is length. Gravity is your friend, it is just amazing what another 8 or 10 inches of length can do to tame those waves. Absalom
