Hello all. Thanks for your encouragement. You people rock! By the way to the person asking about who is a musician on this board, I play piano/keyboards and I'm an aspiring artisit as a composer and songwriter.
Anyway it's been two years now since my last trim and I'm wanting and needing a trim. I plan to do so in a bout three weeks or so. I'm a little concerned. What I hope to do is get it trimmed when I go on this road trip out to the east coast and eastern U.S. What kind of beauty shop/salon should I look for and how can I find one in maybe a somewhat small town or some place I pass through? My hair is close to mid-back and I want to trim about an inch off or maybe even an inch and a half. How can I best communicate with the hairdresser with just walking in the place and tell them all I want is an inch off all around.( my hair is all one length) I'm just concerned they will take too much off as been my experience in years past. If anyone knows of a good place to go In Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, or any east coast state let me know. Also I was wondering if anyone here trims there own hair. I thought about doing that and I even got trimming scissors. What kind of techniques would you use for that? i htought about braiding it all in somewhat thin braids and then measuring a small amount to trim off and then trim it and separate the braids and undo the ones that were just cut so I don't mix it up. I don't know, just an idea. I hope to try the trim thing in a few weeks. Any advice and help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!
Thanks!

I got a trim like 2 days ago and I'm pleased with the results. My Aunt cut my hair and she let me keep some length and I'm happy I didn't flip out like I did from another salon. So what I recommend is find a salon where the stylist understands what you want out of the trim, so then you can be happy with it and not be so concerned every minor detail you might notice. Eh.
Hi Will,
I wouldn't recommend getting your hair cut whilst your on the road. First off all its difficult to make and keep appointments when you are travelling, and I really wouldn't recommend getting your hair cut at a place where you can "walk in and wait"
These places are not Salons they're Barbershops.
Plus if your passing through, what's the incentive for the stylist to listen to you? Its not like you'll ever be coming back will you?
My advice is to make an appointment at a good local Salon, ask some of your friends (girl friends) where they go, a recommendation is always a good place to start. As for explaining what you want done, I think this is pretty simple as you said it yourself.
"Just one to one and half inches off the ends nothing else!!"
If your concerned they will trim too much ask the stylist to show you how much she has lined up to cut before she makes the first snip.
I can't see anything really going wrong for you. Good Luck!

Will,
I would not recommend cutting your hair while you are traveling, although i'm sure there are some outstanding places you could go to on the east coast. I agree with the comments from Sorted. It's also not a good idea to trim it yourself with the braid technique you discussed, it would leave your hair jagged and uneven.
Where are you from and could we see those tresses? I'd offer to trim it for you, but i'm in Texas...

About the music - that's me. I'm also exclusively a composer. I wish I could write lyrics and sing but I can't so I just do instrumentals.
Thanks for sharing and good luck with your hair!
If you are anywhere near Portsmouth NH (Boston MA is less than an hour away), mine is a longhair-friendly men's grooming resource center; I would personally trim your hair EXACTLY the way you want. Check out my website. Hope I can be of service to you.
I know there are places called 'George Michael' (GM) salons that specialise in long hair, and there is one in Richmond, VA. That's not the actual name of it though. Try a search engine. I've never been there either!
