I've just been curious for a while about you guys with waist length hair and especially the ones who's hair is even longer, like knee length. Why do you want your hair so long? It seems like it would be ALOT of trouble to take care of, and seems like it would be hard to just do everyday activities. I just don't understand why anyone would want hair any longer than mid back, or maybe waist length. Please don't take offense to this, as I don't mean any disrespect at all. I just don't understand it and was curious as to the reason one would want such long hair.
Because I can.
Hi, Gibson Guy I have to confess I have an obsession with length. I also wanted to look unique. For me this a lifelong experiment. A close friend of mine dared me to grow it really long. He was just sure I would give up at mid back length. It is currently 16 inches PAST my waist or about 3 inches shy of the back of my knees and still getting longer. Here is a real shocker for you, I am 51 years old too. Growing hair to such great length requires extreme patience and has become a spiritual experience as well. To me long hair is a pillar of stability in my life which is otherwise filled with instabilies. Hair this long is not for everyone. As hair length increases the difficulty of caring for it seems to increase almost geometrically, at least for me this is true. (Twice as long needs 4 times as much maintenance.) From my past experience (circa 1995) mid back length hair is the easiest to take care of and requires the least amount of maintenance.
So I am going to print it out and save it.
Thanx!
You sure extra long hair care doesn't increase *exponentially* with added growth, though?? ;-)
I found that waist length was a good length, as at mid-back length, it still tended to fall forward too much.

You are probably right, i was thinking a bit conservatively. Absalom

Here's another reason for men to grow their hair really, really, really long! Because some women (like me) love men with really long hair!
My husband has hair a third of the way down his back now and he has promised me he won't get it cut (other than little trims for split ends) until it is classic length past his tailbone. I would love it if he would grow it knee length or even ankle length! I love wrapping his long hair around me when I sleep. I especially love his long hair because I prefer to wear my hair very short, so he really has long hair for the both of us!
Keep growing your beautiful hair long guys. Long haired men are gorgeous!
Love,
Monique
Cool little dare you made with your friend, well worth it too. I realy love your hair, and it has to do alot for you. I know some people (Very few)will or do say dumb stuff about it, but I know with hair like that you must get alot of attention and respect. It is truly a great thing to see guys like you with what I would call super length. I have been growing my hair for the past 6 years, since I was eleven. But I would also do something stupid like get undercuts, or accidently cutting it shorter. The last time I cut my hair was almost 2 years when I had a super long undercut style, & decided to let all my hair grow. I wanted not to cut the top, but decided to start over since it wouldn't look right at all to have it that long on the top. My hair is the longest it has ever been in my entire life and is looking really forward to getting my hair as long as yours and beyond. Even as a little boy I always wanted long hair but didn't have the balls to tell my mom. She happens to like my long hair now because I used to get the undercuts, she hated that style, & now so do I. Funny how things work out in the future ;) She likes all my hair being long and so do I. I am glad hair gives you so many chances in life. Well once again, your Cherokee hair fan,
"Insane" Dwayne
Hi Dwayne, my hair does get attention. So far all of it has been positive, but I do live near San Francisco which is longhair friendly. I am glad to hear that you are going to grow your hair to beyond waist length. Really long hair on someone who is really tall like yourself looks absolutely awesome. It will require patience but it will also build strength of character. Be sure to stand steadfast and visualize your goal and in a few years you will be rewarded with really long hair. Absalom
I struggled for years, often abusing my hair with haircuts when it would get to the "Awkward Stage" length--where it kept falling in my eyes or bothering my nose. But once I got it long enough to tie into a pony tail, I stopped cutting it.
I like long hair, and it's a way of expressing my individuality. Really long hair is quite rare, and even rarer on a man.

Growing mid-back-, waist- or knee-length hair isn't simply a matter of going for years and years without a haircut/trim. Your follicles must have a long anagen phase (terminal length). Been there, done that several times over.
How right you are, my active growth phase is very long, and so is my hair. Absalom
Must say I don't see the attraction myself - sure it looks really cool and its amazingly unique, but I'm already waking up in night and realising I can't lift my head off the pillow cos I'm lying on my hair. I really see myself getting into a serious mess if my hair was beyond waist length. I'm so accident prone, I'd probably sit on it, trap in revolving doors, set fire to it, whack small children with it... heck I'd probably even strangle myself with it!
Naw... me thinks I'll stop growing before then.
Because I like it and live in a oountry where I can.
I'll give you the same answer as the last time this was asked.
Instead of making a constant effort of trying to keep it short, I grow it long because that is what hair does, it grows.
It's not so problematic as Sorted imagines it to be and in light of it not being that difficult to take care of, why should very long hair growth not be considered just as much as somewhat long hair?
