I'm cutting my hair. Really really short. It's taking forever to get through the "awkard stage", but that's not the main problem. My main concern is all the people giving me shit for it. I mean...everywhere I go people say I look like a girl and stuff, and it's really annoying me. My family has been bugging me endlessly to cut my hair as well. Another reason is that I really want to get back into competitive swimming (haven't swam for a year) and I'd rather not mess with long hair for that (having to wash the chlorine out and wear a swim cap and all that kind of stuff would drive me crazy). I'm also sick of caring for my hair! I miss the days when I had half-inch long hair and I could use a dime-size splotch of shampoo to wash my hair. Even though I'll be able to tie my hair in a pony tail soon (october probably at the earliest), it's still going to be a huge hassle to deal with.
With that said I wish the best to you all.
Cheers,
Antipex
Let me give you some advice. When someone says "you look like a girl" they don't literally mean that you appear female to them. They are simply trying to insult you. If someone can use your fear of "looking like a girl" as a wedge to change your behavior then they can control you. Never let anyone else determine how you feel about yourself. Long hair is only *one* way for a male to demonstrate that he is not subservient to others. The fact is that maintaining long hair is a significant commitment which is why we don't see a lot of long hair (on men or women) so your desire to simplify your routine for swimming is reasonable given that long hair is not *that* important to you. Please think about it and if you end up cutting your hair because *you* have determined that you prefer short hair at this time then you've made a reasonable choice. Otherwise, please consider sticking out the awkward stage and the insults. You'll end up with long hair and a very thick skin. Good luck.

It is because you are in your awdward stage people are giving you the heat. We all had to get over it, and it did bother us longhairs, but the longer it gets, the less the people bother you. It shows you are weak minded if you let them get to you. Not meaning that as an offensive, but just give your hair some time.
I'd also like to add, people won't respect you any more if you cut your hair for them, they would feel like they own you, they have total control over you and you will feel bad for it, it will cause you to have low self esteem. If you hate your friends, get new ones. The majority longhairs I find are far more friendly than most of the skinheads.
It's not just the comments and crap I'm getting from people - that I can handle. It's the fact that my hair is constantly in my face and everything - I have to wear a hat all the time to keep it under control. Problem is, then it looks like I have a mullet, which is even worse. And even after the awkward stage - it's just too much work to keep it up. I'd rather be styling up 1/2 inch hair than having to worry about 12" long hair. And on top of this, competitive swimming would require that I wear a swim cap (otherwise my hair would drag me down) and I don't want to deal with that.
Keep it long, or cut it. Do whatever the @#$% you want to! We can only offer so much support here.
P.S. - Lemme know if the "tough love" approach helps.
;)
Ok...which one looks better? I personally think the first picture.
Dude, NO ONE looks particularly attractive during the awkward stage. Give it some time, man. Patience is a virtue.
You will have the same spots no matter if you cut your hair or not. Treat them and your face would look much better.
And to be honest, I prefer the second pic.
OK fine...I'm not cutting my hair. (gah i hate decisions! this one is so hard) I'm gonna give it until October, when my last cut will have been 1 year ago. Hopefully by then I'll be able to tie it back...
