just let it be .......let it grow.........dont get it trimmed for at least a year
Dear Randy,
Excuse me for saying, but from the tone of your post it doesn't sound as though you've put a whole lot of thought into this idea. Based on my experience, and what I've observed, when a male in our society decides to let his hair grow, in defiance of prevailing customs, the problems that he is likely to experience fall into one of three catetories:
1) Problems due to the ACTUAL REACTIONS of others, I.E.- employers, customers, spouses, co-workers, friends, etc. This would include having trouble finding a job because of your hair length, losing your job, threats of divorce, your girlfriend leaving you, and so forth.
2) Problems due your own "internalizing" of what others might think. This means that your own self-esteem suffers simply because you THINK that others don't approve of what you're doing, even though they may say or do NOTHING to indicate their disaproval. (this was the BIG ONE for me!)
3) Problems due to the "mechanics" of caring for longer hair. This includes most of the things you were asking about: shampoos, growth time, stylist selection, advisability of getting trims, etc., etc. A person's particular hair type, condition of their scalp, personal habits, environment, and, most of all, thier individual "sense of style", have a great deal to do with how you will care for your hair.
Randy, I would say if you've considered the first two categories and have no problems, then you're mostly home free. I would suggest spending some time researching the previous posts to this board, as well as related websites, in addition to talking with friends and acquaintences (male AND female) who have long hair, for insights and suggestions relevant to your circumstances.
I wish you well, my friend.
I know this doesn't sound helpful, but most of the techniques that you adopt for caring for your hair, will be the ones that you arrive at through experience and trial & error!
Dear Randy,
Apart from the good advice given you by Steve on the social and psychological aspects of growing your hair long, I would add that there is no short-cut to long hair and you will have to bear the inconvenience of that in-between period (fuzzy stage) when the hair is not long enough to put into a pony tail, where it can be blown around by the wind.
Wearing a bandana or cap could help (though the bandana looks cooler)
Now I have curly hair, which is why I almost always tie it in a pony tail to pull it out straight but having curly hair made it even more difficult during the in-between stage.
Its a lot easier to manage now that its long enough.
All the best with growing your hair long.
Charles
What you need to do is start parting it either on the side or the middle whatever you prefer. Then when you can start pushing it bangs and sides behind the ears it really helps through that stage. The longer it gets the better it stays exept for the back which will eventually fallover the ears and thats ok because it looks cool.
Just remember it will take time were talkin 1 1/2 2 years before youll
really love it so prepare youre self it is a committment. And dont worry about other peoples thoughts Ive gotten good feedback from people.because I look more like an individual and Im not another Gen-Xer with
a shaved head.
