I work as a computer lab tech at a local college and want to grow long hair. I have very thick hair and have tried once before but gave up after 9 months. I don't think that I would be able to wear caps or bandanas at my job. I wonder if there are any other suggestions for keeping my hair in place during the "shaggy stage"? I am very serious about growning long hair, but with it being thick and curly I need something special to keep it in place.
Thanks,
TL
Dear TL:
There's always the option of using one of those kinds of gels that turns your hair to virtual concrete. Feels like the devil, but it can help get you through the bushy period. There is another option, however, but it makes some guys too nervous:
What color is your hair? If it's brown or black, you can use a couple of bobbie pins on each side. Pull your hair back as far as it will go, and insert the pins about a half-inch from the ends so they'll hold your hair close to the scalp. If you use compatibly colored pins, and mess with it a bit, this can be a very unobtrusive solution. If anyone tries to tease you about it, just tell them, "Hey, these aren't bobbie pins; they're Bubba pins." [grin] Good luck.

Try Vitalis -- keeps your hair neat all day, without grease!

My roomate had thick curly hair and as he grew it out he had his girlfriend braiding it each month into cornrows. Looked pretty awesome and kept it under control while he it grew out. Now that its several inches long he's letting devlop into dreadlocks. Is that something you 'd consider?
Thanks for all the suggestions. I like the bubba pin idea. My hair is dark brown/black and I think that will work. I also like the two week rule I read on another post, if I had used that the first time I might have been a longhair today.
