I have had long hair (past shoulder) for over a year now and am kinda sick of it. Not frustrated mind you. I've dealt with the people and harrassments, cuz hey nobody likes that, but that didn't bother me and is not effecting my choice.
Here are my complaints and why I wish to cut it:
1. My hair is super thick
- - Lots of cleanup after shower from washing hair
- - I find hairs of mine all over the place, (I am not balding)
- - I wish it was thiner, don't like having all the hair
2. My hair is curly
- - I use a ceramic flat iron to straighten it every few days
- - If hair is wet it curls to hell
- - Have to clean up all the loose hairs after straightening
3. Upkeep
- - Have to avoid getting it wet in daily activities
- - Without a straightener I am not fond of my hair
- - My hair is thick so it goes a lot of different directions
4. My part
- - I have one of those weird parts where it's not in the middle
- - One side of my hair goes straight back, one to the side
- - Looks awkward in a pony tail (how I wear it almost always)
- - If in the middle, one side of my hair is noticeably "taller"
I did get an undershave to eliminate some thickness and I love it. It all depends on the person. I love the look long hair gives you but I don't think I was given the right natural hair to have it. =\
One thing I do want to try is wearing it wet and finding a gel to make the ponytail look wet (sort of like Steven Seagal), but if my hair dries wet I am screwed.
Sometimes when I do a pony, the pony will go in all sorts of directions and looks bad also, I know the person who has the hair will notice a LOT more than any other person around them does, but even I am not happy with my hair.
Even if I did cut it, I don't know what style I'd go to. And I know if I do cut it I will regret it at some point, but not saying I won't love having short hair too. I guess it just wasn't for everybody ya know?
Thanks if you read it all, sometimes a hair can define a person, I need help :(
You all offered good advice, if i was to put down the mirrors I might be repressing the reality of how i look/feel. But i do feel i need more confidence.
How would I go about relaxing my hair?
Thanks for the shorter hair styles, I will check them out now!
You can go to a salon to relax your hair. Any respectable stylist will proberbly not take you though. Not until your hair has recovered from all that straightening you did with an iron. Relaxing already dmged hair is very bad, it will be a frizzy mess. I am assuming (I could be wrong)your hair is dmged due to all that ironing you did. You will need to let it recover (takes about a month). Go to a salon get a free consultation. Tell the stylist you want your hair relaxed, and she will take care of you from there. He/She will most likely recommend some salon products for you to buy as well.
www.friseur.com is a German hair site--in German though. Herron is German for men. Click on the menu listing for that and it will lead you to some pretty cool longer hairstyles for men, but not as long as you have. I have used their site for a year to determine where I'm going with my growing hair. I agree with you that the longer hair can be a pain in the ass, especially if it has some curl (as mine does). All the reasons you listed were solid evidence to me that you are at the end of the line with patience towards your longer hair. So do what I do and check out the internet pic sites for guys with cool hair that is more manageable than what you have. Many have the wavy / curly stuff too. Good luck. Josh
Why don't you just relax your hair? If you straighten your hair almost on a daily basis, then it is less dmging to relax your hair. Seems to me that relaxing your hair will make you happier with your hair. It should fix most of your problems, if not all. Hey, you got nothing to lose, you even want to cut your hair! So I say, just try it. If you're unhappy with the results of relaxing or if something bad happened, then cut it. You would of cut your hair anyway.
Seems to me you need to spend less time thinking about looks and build your self confidence from inside.
Try putting your mirrors down for a few weeks and getting involved in things, then see how you feel about your hair.
It's a shame to repress your hair for... mirrors.
Then again, it's your choice, and it'd be just as bad for me to force you to keep your hair than it is for others to ask me to cut my hair (although that's not happening anymore, whee!)

Whenever I hate my hair long, I remember how much more I hated it when it was short. For me this keeps me going.
I guess though if you prefered your hair short, then this doesn't help a great deal. Plus it sounds like you've got a lot of things that make having long hair a real hassle, particularly as you don't like it in its natural curly state.
I guess the question is if you could find a solution that would help you enjoy long hair with lower maintanenece would you still want to cut it? There are a lot of products designed specially for curly hair and personally I think curly hair can look really cool - just look at That Ball Guy!
Honestly I think your way to happiness is to find a way of manageing your hair in its natural state rather than continuously fighting nature. Cutting your hair short is the last thing you want to do, you want to exhaust all other avenues first. Maybe consider Bebo's suggestion? Not having straight hair myself I'm a little thin on advice, but rather thick on philosophy.
Sorted
i have all the problems you do
-curly hair
-thick as hell
-HAVE to straighten it, trust me it's IMPOSSIBLE to leave my hair curly and have it look good
im still thinking of cutting it, but it looks so damn good on me when long and straight :(
