I´m pretty new on the block. I´ve been growing my hair for four months now and want to get it at least to shoulder length. The problem is, when my hair gets longer it goes wavy. I hate waves and would like it straight. How can I get it straight and keep it straight? Can anybody help me?
Thanks
Keith
Once it gets long enough it will probably become straighter. My hair was practically curly when it was layered to shoulder length, but after it grew to one length below my shoulders it'was pretty straight.
In the meantime you should use plenty of conditioner after shampooing-- a leave-in conditioner like Infusion 23 is good. Then mousse it and comb it straight. This trains the hair as it grows, I think.
If you're not squimish to the idea, using curlers straightens the hair, too, but if you've got fine hair like mine, the cause too much breakage.
Another way that has been working for me (who has wavy hair, particularly in the back) is to start blow drying the ends of your hair first, before moving on to the rest. I use my fingers to pull the last three of four inches of my hair down as I dry it, making sure that I'm aiming the air from the dryer down the length of the hair. Just take your time to dry it, always using your fingers to gently pull it down as you do. Once that is dry, use the same basic technique for the rest of your hair. I use a brush at the end when I'm pretty much done drying my hair to smooth it out. The guy who trims my hair showed this to me, and it has worked pretty well.
Hope that helps! I've also heard that you don't want to begin drying your hair in a room that has a lot of humidity in it, since that encourages the hair to curl.
Longer length (which makes for heavier hair) will eventually help a lot too.
Keith, maybe you could try going to the salon and get your hair "relaxed", it's quite effective ;)
