I've noticed that a lot of guys that either have long hair or are thinking about letting it grow out ask this question. I came across a board where most of the participants were women and posted a poll. While I expected that the answer to the question would be yes, I was very surprised at the numbers. Although there were only 47 responses it seems that most of the women that post there voted. In each case they were permitted to pick more than one answer. The results are below:
Poll Results: Guys With Long Hair (47 votes.)
What length(s) do you think are okay for a guy?
Choose 4
Chin 77% (36)
Shoulder 79% (37)
Mid-back 51% (24)
Longer 30% (14)
How should guys wear their hair?
Choose 5
Straight down 85% (40)
Pony Tail 60% (28)
Braids 30% (14)
Half Pony Tail 21% (10)
Other (please explain) 17% (8)
Interesting, though there's a pretty high potential error rate when your sample is so small, it seems to reflect a pretty good tolerance of long hair from women, which is as far as I'm concerned, very good news. From where were the votes sampled? The group sampled could have a natural bias.
Can you supply a link to the source I'd be very interested to read the responses?
You know it shouldn't matter to you whether woman find long hair on men attractive. You shouldn't be doing it for other people, but yourself. In the end it is you the one with long hair, not the other way around. Bottom line, lots of women love men with long hair, and lot's of women love men with short hair.
"You know it shouldn't matter to you whether woman find long hair on men attractive. You shouldn't be doing it for other people, but yourself. In the end it is you the one with long hair, not the other way around."
You've got a point there but what do you think men's reaction will be if they find out that women find them more attractive with long hair. My guess is that a lot of guys keep there hair short only because they are afraid of what people will say.
1. You're right about the the possibility of a high error rate and I'm not a professional pollster but the response seems legitimate.
2. It was not a "long hair" site just a board where women were posting so there was no bias there. You also have to get approved and wait at least 24 hrs. after registering to make a post so there are not a bunch of "drive-by's".
3. Early on in the thread I put a link to Jarkko's site and let me tell you that rattled a few cages. So far, there has only been one absolutely negative reply to his site and one very positive. The rest can only be described as somewhat surprised but were definately not negative.
4. The thread is still taking hits so I don't want to disclose its location and risk biasing the poll.
Maybe when the thread is done you'll post the link?
From a Statistician's perspective its very unscientific to quote figures without stating the source.
Sorted
"From a Statistician's perspective its very unscientific to quote figures without stating the source."
Yeah. I'll post the URL when the thread quiets down. The comments in the thread are pretty good too.
I checked your site out but didn't see an e-mail address.
Look forward to reading it :-)
No - there isn't one - presently I'm not in a position to receive too much personal mail, that'll change soon, when it does I'll post a means of emailing me.
Was this a long hair oriented site? Those percentages in favor sound pretty high, I was thinking the nature of the site itself might already filter out a lot of anti-long-hair-on-men woman.

No. It was a site that I came across (almost all women) where everyone seemed friendly so I thought it would be a good place to post a poll.
lol, I remember telling one of my girl friends I was growing it out. She was like ''Awsome'' '' Girls love long hair on guys, all the girls I know do'' ''It is such a turn on'' ''As long as its soft and silky'' lol.

I've had similar experiences, so it was no surprise to find that there was a lot of positive response but I never expected the percentages to be that high.
Glad I don't rely on polls and other people's opinions when it comes to decisions about growing my hair.
(since most women in the poll prefer hair that is mostly short or barely long enough to put in a ponytail I'd say that the second question is mostly irrelevant)
"since most women in the poll prefer hair that is mostly short or barely long enough to put in a ponytail I'd say that the second question is mostly irrelevant"
Actually they were allowed multiple choices on length. The overwhelming majority liked the idea of men wearing their hair at least shoulder length and over 50% like it at least mid-back length.
I think maybe you missed a key question.
You forgot to give the women the opportunity to say whether they prefer shorter or longer hair, you poll only asked about whether or not they found it acceptable. This does not indicate their preference, only there tolerance.
Interesting Poll nonetheless.
I intentionally left it out. I figured that there are enough men that wear their hair long anyway that it didn't matter. I also figured that they could give their opinion in the thread itself. I think that by looking at the number that prefer it chin length with those that prefer it at least shoulder length shows that I didn't make too big an error. You are right though, I probably should have included that option.
My personal observation is that I seemed to attract the most favorable looks from women when I was "longish" but not awkward. For me that's just long enough to leave some space over the eyes, yet long enough to have a curl in back. I think most women want something they can run their fingers through, but that is still socially acceptable everywhere. Once the awkward stage began, well... it was just awkward. When I was able to pull it back I got the polarized looks--outright complements or disappointment from a few; the usual indifference from most.
I haven't seriously considered trying to maintain that optimal look that I'm talking about--it's way too difficult to find a barber or stylist who knows what I'm talking about. I always had to grow into it, then it would only last a couple months at best. So, a couple months out of a year women love my hair and then I look like a dork the rest of the time--not worth it.
I'd rather find a woman who likes me the way I like me, and I know from seeing other guys post here that it happens.

"Society", whatever in hell that is, still frowns upon men with long hair. So women, even if they do find guys with long hair attractive, may still feel uneasy about going out with them. Makes you kind of wonder who really controls things.
Well, not all of us are uneasy about it. :-)

Just from my own limited observations throughout life:
Not all..........but MANY WOMEN seem to be driven nuts by guys with Long Hair! Why? Who knows for sure. (It could be the Military-Look? Afterall, THAT look IS associated with Murder in the minds of many...........and the Military DOES teach to KILL the enemy which is normally average people in other lands who desire peace just as much as do we, but are forced-into Combat or THEY may be put to death!) Could it be that this is what turns many of the Women off? Before WWII, short Haircuts like that must have been very rare indeed. Suddenly in the 90's- todays Women have had little choice. The "Lawn-Mower" look has been around quite a while now and there has been precious little choice. But now their choices are expanding as more and more guys are sporting longer hair again.
Very interesting:
Last May I was hired to accompany the local HS. Choral Concert as well as "fill-in" for the Orchestra in a few places on the Viola. The School was packed. One Male Teen...........oh I'ed say about 16 or 17 has hair almost to his waist. The "Audience" seemed to go wild about him and his "Gorgeous" hair! When he entered the Stage there was actually applause and shouts.......not only from the other Teen Girls, but from their Mothers as well! (Sure took me by surprise.) I "NEVER" heard a negative comment from where I was seated from any of the Fathers.
The applause that was afforded this young man who played the Trumpet was equal to the applause at the end of the entire Concert.
I rather think this was sending out an unspoken message of approval.
Oh yes, his hair was very clean and he was dressed (unlike so many of the others) as one should be as a performing Muscian...............not a dirty slob!
hee, hee, hee...........I rather have to laugh at comments all around me regarding this person. Most were saying that he had been growing it long all of his life. He chose to wear it free. Some man pulled my Ponytail and scoffed at me: "So, are you going to grow your hair as long as him?" "Of course" I told him. He offered NO further comment to this "elder." :-)
Indeed a great surprise to myself.
Exellent story. I think that it represents the feelings of many more people than "society" would like.
No TEXT!
I strongly believe that a majority of women like guys with long hair. My cousins simply adore it and want to go nuts styling it once it reaches my shoulders which should take no more than a year. Pratically all the women in my family and at my job like me with long hair. I've recieved some compliments by the customers too, including a biker whose hair length was the exact length I want my hair to be at, which was about 2/3 the length of his back.
Simply answering your Subject question:
My ex-husband had long hair (mid-back).
I dated several men, all of whom had mid-back or longer hair.
My new husband has long hair (mid-back). He's gorgeous.
It's not mandatory, but definitely a big preference. :-)

As a woman: I can find long hair attractive, sometimes I see it on men and it makes them instantly interesting (especially when they have curls). Movies like LOTR show how long hair can improves men's looks so much. But on the other hand, I have to be honest and say that long hair can have the opposite effect as well, when it's on unatractive men it increases their unatractiveness.
Yeah I found this to be very true that alot off Females find guys attractive with long hair Ive had two females state the fact that they fancy Me its because I have long hair.
