I emailed Victor about this, but figured I'd get some other opinions as well. A while back there were complaints about off topic posts. I don't mind them myself. But maybe we could implement categories in the board. Maybe some different hair-related categories and an off-topic category. I really think the board would benefit from something like that. What do you guys think?
I think its a borderline case, the board is pretty busy, but not that busy that threads dissappear too quickly. (Not if you check the board every day or two.)
How would you propose categorising the board? By creating an Off-Topic Category you kinda are throwing the board (or a part of it) open to say "anything goes" that kinda defeats the purpose of the board namely Mens Long Hair issues. By accommodating limited off-topic posts within the main forum you can at least keep the board focussed.
Why do you want the board categorised? Is it to keep the Off-topic posts out of the general discussion?

Well, yeah. I mean, the main board for discussing long hair wil always be here, but we'd just have an 'off-topic' category to keep topics seperate. It's seems like off-topic discussions are enjoyed by alot of members, and this way those who want to talk about hair don't have to sift through any off-topic posts. And an off topic category would allow members to see what else they have in common with others, besides long hair. And it'd be a simple matter to avoid the off topic category for those primarily interested in hair discussion. I don't see how it would really cause a problem. If problem's arise, the category could be removed. It's just a suggestion, more for the sake of others than for myself. I'm happy with the board as-is, but thought I'd throw this idea out there anyways.
If you don't want to read the off topic posts, don't read them, it's very simple!
I dunno I think some of the lower threads might get read a little more and developed to their full extent if they were not so far down the page, so by catagorising the board you might keep threads "in focus" a little longer.
However I'm not sure about the notion of an Off-topic forum as it would just encourage off-topic posts which is not what this place is really about, I think that by keeping all the categories hair related and incorporating all the off topic posts within them we stay true to the boards purpose. I don't find off-topic posts an inconvenience, unless of course they start to take over.
The only way an Off-topic forum would work is if it was restricted to Registered Members, otherwise it would throw the place open to anyone, even those without a genuine interest in long hair.

A lot of boards have the feature of moving posts to the top of the page whenever there's been a posting in it. So active threads won't drift away.
That was my thought, too, but the problem is when people resurrect threads that've been dead for months. Perhaps with the archive system here, though, and the fact that none of those old posts are on the front page, we wouldn't have that problem. Might be something to consider.
How about you kids getting off of the computer once in a while and try experiencing real life for a change....there is more to life than what you find on a computer screen. Read a book, take a walk, learn to write with a pen, travel and try a few days off-line and see how much you are missing.....
True, I'm always out and about

Well, I went fishing this afternoon. Didn't catch anything and the only bites that I had were from mosquitoes, but the positive side was that I spent a few hours in the open.

For someone calling themselves peace and love that's rather rude.
I know I don't spend much more than half an hour at a time on the internet, and that's just when I get the time. In fact, I don't think there'd be many here (if any at all) that would be bored enough to sit all day clicking the refresh button.
But hey, maybe you know better than me.

well, i think this would be a bad idea
i know that personally once the board is categorized i will end up reading only one or two section, and miss out a great deal that's hidden in the other sections.
of course it should be easy to have a pseudo-section that would include all the other sections. That might be the most sensible solution.

I know of a board (http://www.frenzyboard.com/ maybe you have to be logged in to see it) where you can choose one or more categories for your post, and then others can use a filter (which is available on the thread listing page) to chose which categories they want to see.
Well if Victor doesn't agree to doing that, I have a Messageboard on my website like that. I have long hair, stuff about my website, and even an Off Topic Board on the site. It is sorta new.

PS: Here is the link...
I would far rather the Board stick to what it is - a mens Long Hair Board.
As this it has always been a freindly place without flames or other intolerances and absolutely no disputes. Start going down other roads even with an 'Off Topic' header then falmes wil;l start - We all share a love of long hair so we are as one - other matters there are as many views as contributers - and peace will not last.
What is with this fascination about veering away? There are many other forums PLEASE take other subject there and let this place stay a pleasure to visit.
Great idea
