The damage of using hair control products?

  First time poster. Hair length a little longer than surferdudes. I usually just mousse up the top and let the sides flair out with wings.

  Question: How dangerous are certain hair control products on longer hair? Are some good for it, bad for it, or neither? Sometimes I wonder if mousse could be damaging my hair. Then again sometimes I fall asleep with it still in my hair from the day.

  Also with all the mention of "stop using heavy gel" it kind of scares me enough not to use any control product anymore. The look I try to go for is the european slicked back front.

  Is there a product best to use to cause the smallest amount of damage possible? A ranking possibly?

  ...or does it even matter?

    Mousse is fine as long as its alcohol free, same applies to all styling products.
