Hello,
looking for advice. I haven't had long hair since high school. (God help me it was a mullet. Bad Bad hair) I"m 32 now. I am in the dreaded awkward phase, have been growing for 2 months, everyone says I need a haircut and I look disturbingly like John Denver.
Does anyone have any advice, stories about how to get through this phase? I have to look somewhat professional. I am a journalist and can't look like a reject from a Star Trek convention.
Thanks in advance.
Rick
The awkward stage is a killer, its take a lot to get through. If you need a "professional look" then here are a few suggestions:
1) GEL - lots of it, or some other product to control your hair.
2) TRIM but just the back n sides, leave the top & front well alone, just keep the rest of your hair well shaped. This will however inevitably stumb your overall progress as hairdressers invariably cut more than they should or take it from the wrong places. Plus your hair will take longer to "look long".
3) You're 32, still young enough not to feel odd with a less conservative messy style, embrace the awkward stage and use some wax to sculpt a modern style.
4) Accept the John Dever Look, there are worse hair styles... just look at a footballers (UK) from the 80's! Naw seriously, at the John Denver stage the awkward stage was easy, a little wax or gel gave the style a little definition and it looks pretty good. Its only when its all fluffy that its a problem.
Either way, you'll be through it inside of a year - which when you look back on it you'll wonder where it went.
Good Luck growing
Sorted.
Good response, man. Josh
Rick, welcome to the awkward club, man. It's the pits sometimes.
My hair is wavy, sometimes a little curly. So, Rick, for me, personally, to endure what sometimes seems like endless awkward stages, I work pretty closely with a professional stylist. She's not allowed to get out the scissors around me, but she's great to help me with non-damaging products to style, then hold my hair in place. She's good to help me figure ways to wear my hair, considering, basically, each day is a new day visually.
In light of some of the advice you have the potential for getting on this site, mine's pretty light I guess. But I want my hair to look good and I don't mind paying someone to help me out. The "pros" do this for a living, so why work the backrooms, so to speak, when they're trained and qualified--at least, that's my mantra.
Best wishes, Rick. Longer hair is awesome. I'm like you, going into it from some downtime looking buzzed and "cool" (yeah, right). And, like you, I'm a professional who has to make certain I'm on steady ground with those who pay me. Stay in touch, write some more here on the site. Josh
