Hi, I want to grow my hair out but right now I'm completely discouraged. Last time I cut my hair was about 6 months ago and now it looks very bad. I mean that it's quite curly and I feel like cutting it. Every one tells me to cut it and that's very bad. What should I do? Do I have a chance of having better hair when they grow a little longer?
the first thing you have to learn about having long hair is dont do what outher people want you to do .....do what you want to do for yourself if you want to grow your hair out do .........i dont have curly hair but i have read on here from outher guys whoi do have curly hair that sometimes when it gets longer it gets strighter so dont give up yet keep it growing youll realy like it when it gets longer youll see
Alitaras, you're in the very early stages of growing long hair. Hardly anybody's hair looks good after the first 6 month's growth. A bit of suffering now will be rewarded with years of pleasure from having long hair, believe me.
A lot of people like having curly hair. Check the website below (it's mostly for women, but I think the idea still applies). Curly hair can be a real asset to your appearance, but if you must have it straighter, try heavy conditioning: a strong rinse-out conditioner, followed by and leave in one. Also, use a deep conditioner every week or so. Try an extra hold moisturizing mousse afterward to comb it straighter.
I'd avoid chemical straightening, since this is like perming and alters the hair such that it will look different from new growth.
Stick it out, dude!

I went through that stage when I was growing out "the mullet".... Hair to short at the sides to tie back....but long enough to look unbalanced (the hair...not me haha ),so I dusted off my baseball cap,and wore it everyday for 6 months until my hair was long enough to tie back..and/or long enough to wear down.
This obviously, wont appeal to all....but it's how I solved the problem.Luckily I have a casual type job where I can have long hair..and wear jeans etc...this approach just wouldnt work if you wear a suit hahahaha...although...you could always start a "new" trend !!!
But as all longhairs will tell you....we all go through this "yuck stage" and that's part of the experience. As a learning guitarist I wish I could go from learner to Van Halens ability in a flash...but alas,as in all things worth while....patience,perseverance and a vison will get you there.
Stay with it....and in a quick 6 months you will be glad you didnt give up !!!

Russ,
Please forgive me, I don't want to risk starting another round of heated discussions about the much-maligned "mullet", but I was wondering... It sounds like you took the same route as many (myself included)to achieve 'legitimate' longhair status, I.E.- sneaking one foot into the longhair camp by just letting it grow a little longer in the back, and before you know it, people are already "writing" you off as a shameless example of societal degradation, so you might as well go all the way. By the time it really starts getting long, you love it too much to go back. You've arrived!
What I was curious about was: how long did you wait before you had your "mudflap" trimmed to be even with the rest of your hair? Or did you do this at all? It obviously needs doing at some point, but it seems a difficult decision to make, at least until one has "length to spare". Just wondering.

Welcome to the club. The last time I grew my hair out, I got the back into a small ponytail, but the sides were still too short. For the several months it took for them to catch up, I used a light hairspray to hold the hairs in place. Gel would do the same thing. I don't know about very curly hair (mine is very wavy, but workable). Part of the challenge of growing your hair out is living through this stage. Best of luck, man, and don't listen to anyone else but that inner voice!
