WOW I haven't posted here in over two years, didn't even remember this but found it while cleaning out files on my computer so figured id make a post.. guess you can consider this an update. I have no clue what my handle was so I guess that doesn't help but two years ago I cut my hair after about 20 months of growth. Honestly, it was the best move I ever made, I read a few posts and it's just so shocking to see how much I have changed these past two years. Only two years ago I had long hair, was into "progressive" rock music, was very into guitar, did not believe in following fashion or trends and was basically an outsider to popular culture/media. I cut my hair b/c I didn't have the nicest looking hair and just wanted a change so I got a short spiked-in-the-front type cut. I was pretty thin so I got into serious bodybuilding about a year nd a half ago, I now get bored listening to a Dream Theater song which I never in a million years thought would happen and could care less about old rock/metal, I still play guitar but just simple stuff every now and then, I got rid of my crappy car and bought a new sports car, I now own nothing but name-brand clothing which again I never figured I would, and overall my confidence/social-skills just went through the roof.
And I used to think that long hair was just the natural thing to do, if our hair was meant to be short it wouldn't grow that long. I wanted waist-lenght hair and it was one of the most important aspects of my life.... that seems really odd now, when people would tell me "it's just hair" I couldn't understand that and now I say it myself. So I guess it's pretty crazy how we can go through such a radical change even if we don't expect it to, I would never in a million years go back to long hair or any of the lifestyle that went with it... being in touch with popular culture is honestly nowhere near as bad as I made it out to be in my head, I love it. But with that said i'm still a very open-minded person and wish you guys luck in growing it out, hope ya'll don't get hated on too much by ignortant people either cause I know I did every now and then back when I had it long but oh well it's not their hair. later.
I think its great that you came back with this update, everyone needs to find the place where their happiest, sometimes we have to explore a few wrong paths before we do, and sometimes even the wrong paths look like the right ones at the time. They may even be the right path for this time in your life, but your goals and your perspective change and you need to move onto a different path. That's Life, never say never.
Your new found consumerism might grind at a few people here, but not as many as you might think. We're not all die hard longhairs or progressive rock fans who don't give a toss about our appearance. A lot of us take it very seriously, (and still are progressive rock fans *grin*.) Long hair goes very well with designer clothes and cool cars. It also goes very well with a pair of beat up jeans and a Pink Floyd T-shirt. ;-) The perfect ascessory...:-)
Ultimately you have to live your life in a way that makes you happy and you sound pretty happy with your choices so the best of luck to you. Just remember what the song says:
Confidence is a preference for the habitual voyeur of what is known as parklife. - Blur
Very well put.
Yes, to walk a path outside of the 'mainstream' is not for everyone. It is much easier and comfortable to do what everyone else is doing, as you have found.
It appears that both your 'old' phase and your new one are based on external factors. Image, and what other people think, is very important to you.
For most of us on this board however, long hair is not just an image, but a deeper, internal expression. Our hair has nothing to do with what music we listen to, what cars we drive or what clothes we wear. We are not one demographical group, the people here are as varied as they come.
All this by way of explanation. I have known people who have lost their job, partner, car etc in one very short space of time. With no external props, no status symbols, and not having cultivated their internal natures, these people invariably go into deep crisis.
Just a point to ponder.
Take care,
Huey
Well said, Huey.
You say "it's just hair." Well, I say "it's just thread." We all can't afford to have someone's last name stiched onto our clothing, whereas we all can grow our hair out for next to nothing.
I enjoy my social life a lot. I don't need a sportscar or a Polo shirt to make friends.
We can all have longhair. We can't all drive sportscars or wear name brands (that would kill the prestige). If doing the latter makes you happy, just think about exactly what it is that you are doing.
I would never in a million years go back to long hair or any of the lifestyle that went with it...
How do you know?
Two years ago you never would've imagined typing that.

Hmm...
Could this be a bit of flame bait trolling?
No substance, no id, no photo, no email.
And a nice bit of dissn' Longhairs - all in one tidy package!
Hmmm...
Madoc
Could be a troll.
Even if it's for real, it's very supeficial. I have nothing against nice clothes and sports cars. I'm all for them, but they are not generally in my budget. Perhaps he is implying that if we cut off our hair we will make loads of money? Cutting off my hair and listening to cr*ppy music certainly isn't calculated to boost _my_ confidence.
As for long hair lifestyles, what does he mean? Riding a motorcycle? I used to ride one and would get another one if I could afford to. IME most of the motorcyclists these days have short hair. Taking drugs maybe? There's no rule that you have to take drugs if you have long hair. Pressure to do so is a myth in my considerable experience.
Yeah I even know a couple of Hell's Angles... they both have short hair, not buzzed, but short.
All the drug taking I have been party to, has been with short haired people... I personally see no correlation with long hair.
Funny that these preconceptions still exist... maybe I better go and find a tree to hug... huh?
Sorted
Don't diss us tree-huggers! ;)
Hi Madoc. It appears you could be right, I am not sure. Regardless of what he says, I will continue to grow mine. By the way, you have great looking hair. Absalom
I understand changing your look. I am nearly forty and I am growing my hair long for the first time. But, how could you ever get tired of Dream Theater? They have one of the great drummers in rock/metal, and some of the best song writing in the genre.
Did you know two years ago you'd become this shallow? My little brother went through the same phase you did except he's 12 years old. He switched from alternative pop music to strictly hardcore rap. He dressed and acted totally differently to suit, make people happy and get attention. It sounds like your doing the same. Are you disgracing yourself by not being the real you? So many people fall to doing this. But its not too late. 'TOOL' calls you back.
Yep..sounds like a troll to me.
Strange, everything was found in the old files except the handle. How (in)convenient, so we can;t search the archive!
As long as you're doing what makes *you* feel good, then it's the right thing for you.
For me, I'm into metal and long hair and other stuff, but most of my friends aren't. They respect me for who I am, and I respect them for who they are, so it's all good.
And I think you have the wrong message board. This message board is for people who like long hair.
