Hey guys. I last got my hair cut at the beginning of Feb, figured I'd tried something new and grow it long. Anyway, after about 4 months (basically when it was a few inches) it started curling a bit at the back, and its still like that now. Its straight everywhere else, its just the bits around the very back (and at the bottom) that are in line with the ears, kind of curls upwards a bit. I'm going to get it cut next week, you guys call it maintenance trimming or something right? Well firstly is the back curling thing bad? And secondly is there anything I need to tell the hairdresser (I have no idea if they're called the same thing in the US as they are here (England)) to do apart from a general trim? Thanks!
the hair curling in the back can, in fact, save you from maintenance trims. It saves you from the mullet look some people despise.
Why do you get it cut if you want it long?

Well, I dunno. I was told to get it trimmed every now and then to keep it in good condition or something?
But will the curl eventually go?
Yes the curl will go away. And maintanence cuts if any are not required very often. I myself have been growing for over two years with zero trims except for getting my sideburns and neck hair fixed up.
Really? Cool, guess I won't be getting the trim then.
By the way though, is the curl a common thing or not? And will it get longer and curl even further up? Because then it'd start getting a bit too noticable..
Welcome to the awkward phase. You're not alone.
when i grew my hair out my hair started to curl about the same time yours did......and yeah its probably gonna curl even more but when u get to a year mark the curls should settle down ......atleast mine have anyway

You will grow past the curling when your hair gets longer and heavier. Although trimming might get rid of them for three of four weeks the curls will certainly come back when your hair gets back to this length.
The awkward stage is something to suffer it goes away and the result is fine long hair.
Hi!
The "Curling" is normal..............and it will most likely continue as your hair grows longer............but here I am talking about the ends only if for the most part your hair is relatively straight.
Same thing happened(s) to myself. The LONGER it hangs, (now at 13+") the ends STILL flip even though gravity is doing its thing. Where the "flips" were once higher, they seem to move longer and the area of which you talk where your hair is curling returns to a straight or slightly wavy look.
I tell you...........of the WHOLE "Awkward Stage," the worst seems to be getting it lower than the tops of your shoulders which automatically flips the hair like you wouldn't believe!
Just hang in there. A year from now you will be glad you did. Two years from now you won't even have to think about the "curls" hardly at all.
Good luck in growing it out.
