There are many stereotypes that go along with lonh hairs, but some people (especially the young generation) seem to think that all long hairs are compulsory HardRock/HeavyMetal lovers.
Even in "RUGRATS", the parents had a comment about the guy with spectacles having long hair:
"If he had long hair, he`d be a Hard Rock musician"
How many of you out there have no relation whatsoever with the guitar, Rock and Metal??
Guess the Stereotype kinda applies to me, I'm not a metal fan, but I like Most Genre's of Rock Music, Punk Rock, Glam Rock, Soft Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock n Roll (apart from how it originated in the 50's.) But mostly I'm more of an Indie Fan. (Though most my favorite Bands are no longer signed to Indie Lables.)
I also play Bass Guitar, but the stereotype is wildly inaccurate. I play in my brother's band from time to time www.liveandloaded.com but none of the other band members have long hair.
Sorted
Well, personally I do fall under that category. But I've always wanted long hair, but not always liked metal.
Anyway I've know a few guys with long hair who weren't into rock/metal at all.
So it is just that, a stereotype.
I am a Queen fan, but that's as far as my interest in rock goes.
That being said, if somebody thought I was a rok musiian, I wouldn't mind!
I love the metal genre, so I guess I fit your stereotype. But I also like other genres like Folk, Jazz, Trance, Indie, Funk, even classical.
I really despise rap though.
...I really despise rap though.
Yeah me too and I'm not much for use of expletives in music (or normal language for that matter) either. I think rap's boring as hell!
Yes,as Chuck Schuldiner says himself:
Rap has got a racial aspect and sexist too in my opinion.
It has taken a racial proportion. White people have also responded by making their own rap too.
Musically, the song structures are minimalists, the vocals predominate.
The paradox in all this is that white men invented rap and now rap is done mostly by black people,
whereas Rock'nRoll was invented by blacks and yet they hate it and now only white people make it.
I enjoy all music: Classical, Big Band, Jazz, Popular and Ragtime, but did not learn to appreciate rock, hard rock or opera....
Well Metal & Hard Rock are my favorite music genres so I guess that I do fit the sterotype.
I enjoy listening to rock like Metallica, Aerosmith, Nickleback, and Evanessence. We all have different tastes in music. Some African-American longhairs might enjoy rap or R&B, but taste in music doesn't really have to depend to hair.
Well, Im growing my hair out still, but i do fit the profile. But, on the other hand i think long hair also fits the hippy profile as well such as the grateful dead(which i love). Nothing Hard Rock about that.
Well, I do play guitar, but hard rock isn't my thing. I'm a big fan of indie rock/pop, and I think I'm the only one into that kind of music here. Right now I'm seriously addicted to Death Cab For Cutie. Fucking amazing band, but definitely not 'hard rock'. I don't really fit the stereotype of 'longhair' at all, even in personality. Which is fine with me, 'cause I've always accepted I'm a little ummmm...'different'.
I'm into underground hip hop, turntablism, progressive rock, some hard rock, some metal, synth and underground dance (jungle/drum & bass/hardcore/nu-skool break), but in no real order of preference, but if I had to choose, I'd keep my underground dance and prog rock.
I am in the catagory of being completely disinterested in music other than Classical. Classical "talks" to me........the other says nothing in my particular case.
Classical "talks" to me........the other says nothing in my particular case.
I agree with that. Classical music is so beautiful, it really does speak, and I enjoy it very much. I'd much rather listen to a violin concerto than some death metal rubbish.
p.s Thanks for all your support today. Have you heared a beautiful piece by the modern composer Ludovico Einaudi, called Limbo? It can be found on the album 'I Giorni', It's such a wonderful piano piece.
I really hear you on that one.
No problem Surferdude. Happy to do so. BTY:Whoever this "Dud" is, I am convinced he is extremely jealous of your hair growing triumph to date which is doing so great, not to mention your superior intelligence. Oh well............"Flunkies" in life seem to abound.
I have never heard of him..............but will be sure to seek out this piece soon. Perhaps I can find it in a Music Store tomorrow. Thanks so much for the tip as I am always looking for something new. Discoveries abound with the little-known composers.
Have a nice weekend.

...Have you ever listened to some of John Williams compositions?
He predominantly writes classical scores for Films, its his music behind: E.T. Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Harry Potty, Schindlers List and Jurrasic Park.
His music really makes the movies, adding so much to the mood and the depth of feeling that would otherwise be lost if you relied on the actors alone. (No disrespect to the actors but the music is a big part, just look at the "lost scenes" that appear on DVD's that don't include a musical scores.)

Hi Sorted-
Yes, Williams (not only as a former Conductor of the Boston Symphoney Orchestra) but writer in the particular field he is in musically DOES really make the Pictures a success. Many people don't realize it, but even a poorly made Movie that has a good composers music behind it suddenly raises its appeal. Then on the other hand, a superb Movie without a good composer behind it will flop. Music is indeed a very powerful force.

Back before the sixties, when people referred to "longhaired music", classical was what they meant! Now people associate the music of the sixties and seventies with longhairs, and that happens to be what I like. So I live up to people's stereotypes when it comes to music. When people see me, they expect I will like that stuff:

Bill
Hey Bill,..........really great photo! :-)
Of this I was unaware...........and I am suppose to be the Musician of note! Thanks for letting me know of this.
In music it really boils down to what the person likes. (Music:"to amuse.")
When people see you, I dare say that they are struck by total respect at a person with such a fantastically brillante mind!
Justin~
Actually, I come off as a happy and harmless hippie at first, and probably not an any-brighter-than-average sort to those I first meet. I then tend to quickly adjust my perceived brightness level and mental state to that of those I'm with. Without chemical help I can get mellow and giggly with friends who are stoned. I can get very legal or technical with others who are in that frame of mind. I grew up in a blue collar mining town, and I've worked in urban professional offices. I can fit in with a wide range of people.
Long hair creates a stereotype in the minds of many, and this can present a momentary smoke screen to others while you size them up. In time, one learns to play the timing that this situation presents just right to best connect with others. This is just one more facet, as I see it, to growing into becoming a longhair.
Bill
I am in no way related to those things... I'm a classical musician and in fact, many classical musicians (especially old-timers) consider metal/hard rock 'the enemy'. I'm quite neutral, actually, but there's no way in hell I'd willingly go to a metal concert.
Love,
Kiat T.
Metal and classical blends together very beautifully, so it's weird to consider one the enemy, I'd say.
Although I don't particularly shun hardrock/metal, I don't think those two really 'blend' with classical... But to each his own, LOL.
Love,
Kiat T.
Have you ever heard the german group Haggard (http://www.haggard.de/)?
They're a 17-man band, who does a great job of mixing baroque and metal. At least I think they do :)
That's really interesting, I'd love to hear a song. Give me a song title that you recommend and I'll go download (shame on me) it.
Love,
Kiat
I play guitar among a few other instruments and Am huge into alot of different styles of metal.
I've always liked rock music (well, some of it - there's good and bad of all types of music), since I was a boy in the 60's.
This has been the case whether I've had long or short hair.
I've also always liked some folk/acoustic music, some classical and even some electro-pop!
Wandering off-topic: A curious thing is happenning with the younger generation re. rock music. In the late 70's the rock music following divided into the prog-rock bands like Genesis (?), Yes, Pink Floyd etc, and the metal bands like Motorhead, AC-DC, with Led Zeppelin hovering somewhere between.
There was an element of snobbishness in that the prog-rock fans looked down on the metal fans. But todays young rock fans (my son is one) now look on metal bands like Guns n'Roses and Led Zep (posthumously branded as THE original heavy metal band*)as the real icons of rock.
Cheers, Barry
*what about Hawkwind?
... I couldn't really stand rock music that much. I always listened to and composed instrumental dance/ambient music for synth. Suddenly in January I made new friends and got into rock music and heavy metal so yeah, I guess I am a metal head now, but not by tradition.
Sounds like your hair has been growin' underneath your scalp as well as on top of it. [grin]
Long hair is noted for that.
Bill
I guess one could say I'm a bit like a 'rocker in reverse'!
I guess by your name you like Maiden? :D
No, some of us are mainly into 70s prog rock and electronic music... and occasionally even compose the latter themselves:
I do like rock music, but mostly I'm a fan of jambands like Phish, SCI, STS9. I don't think they're considered rock bands, and a lot of the members of my favorite bands have short hair. I'm learning guitar (very slowly unfortuantly, heh), so I can fit the stereotypical longhaired guy. Wouldn't want to be a misfit or anything!
Well, if the RugRats think so then it must be so because they always struck me as being real authorities on rock culture.
; )
I'va had long hair for a while and i really don't like metal !
