My new job is a truck unloader position which involves alot of strenuous work. I keep my hair tied back and it gets very sweaty and knotted still. I work from 3-midnight and around 7:30 I go home for dinner and at this point I untie my hair and try to deknot it as best I can before retying it to head back to work. When I do finally get home at midnight I deknot again and then shower. How damaging do you think the constant sweat and tying back of my hair will be?
Not very... the body tends not to secrete things that are harmful to the rest of the body, sweat certainly won't damage your hair. And provided you are not tying your hair back too tight and you detangle gently, you'll not cause any damage with that either.
A good suggestion came from I think Luckskind, who suggested tying a segemented ponytail to avoid tangles when sleeping. I think this advice could apply well to your situation.
Next time you tie your hair in a ponytail, tie another hairband halfway down the length of your tail, and another just before the end. I've taken to sleeping like this and I wake up with much fewer tangles (my tail is around 6-7 inches long). I think this would help a lot in your situation.

Excellent advice, Sorted. My ponytail is about 39 inches long and I do the same. I put 8 or 9 soft cloth ties on my hair at about 4 inch intervals and it works well even in windy conditions. I ride a bicycle to stay fit and since my hair is exposed to sustained wind speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour I have no choice but to do this. Absalom
Are the cloth ties you speak of the ones that come in a rainbow of colors? If these are the ones im thinking of then I will pick some up.
Yes Nige, they are. Sorry for not following up sooner, I somehow missed reading your post. Absalom
My tail is quite long as well around Gollans length. The only problem is my hair is crazy its fine hair but thick with waves curles and whatever else that makes it do what it does. Even when in the ponytail its a weird mass of curls and twists which makes putting ties down the length difficult because most of the hair is twisted in weird directions.
I often work in temperatures of 120 plus, and wear a hardhat to boot ! I find a dewrag or sweatband helps a great deal. At the end of the day, lots of conditioner and gentle detangling in the shower puts things right.
Ya I have been very careful with my detangling and have been applying quite alot of conditioner as well thanks.
Just my opinion only..............but I don't think all that bad. Sweat shouldn't hurt the hair that I know of. There are MANY Longhairs living in the tropical areas of the Earth.
Just make sure that the tie is the type that is safe for your hair and won't rip at it like elastic. Also, perhaps wet it down and apply some "Leave-in-Conditioner" daily to help protect.
"Hot Oil" treatments you may find to do wonders when you wash and Shampoo.
Yes changing hair ties is a major must. I am currently using the black elastic ones with the metal piece. Im just not sure what I should be using or if the other types will give me enough tightness to keep my tail in for the whole shift.
Glad you won't be using elastic anymore. The "safe type" are very easy, but you will probably have to double-up on one to make it hold.
1. Gather all of the hair and get it through the band.
2. While holding the hair w/one hand twist the band over so as to tighten and pull hair through.
Your done! :-)
Also Katherine I cannot read your post it goes to a differnt post you guys must have posted at the same time if you could repost it would be much appreciated.
I suggested a braid, which I have always found more comfortable and flexible than multiple bands. When I used to work in maintenance, I would put my hair up in a braid as soon as it was dry enough, and not take it down except to wash it. It got to be knee-length.
I dont know how to braid my hair maby I should learn but Im not overly into the look.
