I don't watch TV so I don't see shows that catagorize music. I was just wondering what makes music "emo" or "indie". I'm guessing that "indie" means it's independently produced by a smaller label, but that could be any type of music, hip hop to classical. The emo I have no clue?
Just wondering, if it's too off-topic just delete it, I won't be offended.
With indie, originally you're right it is independently released music. Nowadays it seems it's been changed to refer to a specific sound, which I'd classify as softrock/rock.
Emo originally evolved from hardcore, being more Emotional (not the full explanation of course). Nowadays it often has very little to do with hardcore music.
Yeah - I'd agree with that... Its the "Indie Sound" I'm a fan off, this includes bands like:
- Ash
- Radiohead
- Feeder
- ColdPlay
- The Strokes
- Snow Patrol
- Keane
- Muse
Admitted their's a lot of cross over of Genre's it could be argued that Muse and Ash are "Modern Punk Rock" but equally you could even draw BritPop Acts like Oasis, Blur, Travis, The verve into the Indie Mix. Plus you could expand it to include long running soft rock bands like U2 & REM.
I guess the "Indie Sound" is rather broad, but it doesn't stem so far as to include Classic Rock Outfits like Aerosmith or Guns n Roses, or Progressive Rock like Pink Floyd. But it covers just about everything else in Soft Rock/Rock Genres since 1990.
Sorted
I can't stand the crap that's played on the radio. It sounds so generic and commerically contrived, with little original creativity...so I'm an indie fan. Some bands I recommend are
Death Cab For Cutie (emo AND indie)
Throwing Muses
Pixies
Dandy Warhols
Sleater-Kinney
Metric
Neutral Milk Hotel
Yeah Yeah Yeah's
New Pornographers
Fugazi
Well I've often wondered what EMO or as I prefer to call it EMU lol!!! Just alot in inane from what I can gather, don't get me wrong I've got a very open mind to music, give some good black or death metal as well. Even the death metal bands from Belgium sound more lyrical and melodic than some of the stuff I've listened to.
But of course I'm always happy to be corrected on that.
Cheers,
John. (how's listening to a rather fine band from Chicago, November's Doom)
