I have updated my website and posted my July 2004 progress pictures. There is not a huge visible difference this month. The half-inch (1 cm) of growth was eclipsed by the wave in my hair that I got from the hairstyle I wore on the day of the pictures. The bonus picture page is probably the most interesting part of this month's update. It is all about buns and hair sticks! I recommend you read the introduction on the bonus picture page so you can get a sense of my thinking and goals. Once again, I want to thank my fellow community members for your ongoing support. I want to especially thank Victor for providing this great community.

Great photos and great hair without question!
My own hair (now at 13-1/2")looks at this point the length of yours, and I well know the feeling now of ENJOYING Long Hair. It is such a blast! (I also try different things............it's fun!) For myself, lately I have liked a rather "asometric(sp?) look." Funny, but when your hair is finally long enough just about anything will look good. I am sure you have found that out. Hey, doesn't it feel great when the wind is blowing.............except when it gets in your eyes. LoL But it is SO WORTH IT!
BTW: Who ever said Hairsticks were only for the Ladies? Nonsense. You have proved a great point with the photos. The main thing: You are happy with your Long Hair and ENJOYING it! Good! That is what counts the most. You sure had to put in your time to achieve it........but aren't the rewards not only fantastic, but exciting as well.
On another subject: I envy ALL OF YOU GUYS that post photos and know how to operate a Computor with such ease. Without going into great detail........I finally bought a Digital Camera 2 weeks ago. (It is Fugi.) But alas, the guy who was to have taken some photos of myself had his own camera stolen when just on the verge of taking some photos of me almost 2 months ago! Hence I bought one. But, now he is in the Bay Area........and I don't know for how long. And to think, I sit here so frustrated that NO ONE in my "University" town even cares about a 25.00 reward offer to show me how to use the Camera............take a few photos of my hair, nor run the disc needed 1st so that the photos can be uploaded which I have not the foggiest idea how to do. Tonight I stayed outside a Supermarket for about an hour asking EVERYONE leaving if they would care for a one time reward if they could help. Not ONE Teen seems to care about making an (easy for them) 25.00 these days! When younger, I would have been the 1st to jump at the offer.
Alas, most minds function in the Computor direction. Mine doesen't even register. Okay........laugh, (I don't care) but when I 1st got this Computor I paid someone 100.00 to program it and set it up. He tried to teach me a few things..........I eventually learned. But can you imagine..............taking 1 hour to finally learn how to turn this thing on and shut it down? (Must be part of a disease I have, which without most likely I couldn't function so well in but one area, that being Music. A composer with 200+ works that have gone to print in my lifetime.) Almost like a "Mozart" Trade-off.............except Mozart was far better in ability than myself yet could ONLY function in Music. Period! At least I don't have his problem of being unable to function in society.
Sorry Gollan for venting these frustrations as part of your post. Tonight it is driving me "up a wall" as I want to get those photos on at long last so badly.
Again, your hair is to be admired greatly!
Justin~
Maybe I can help. The CD that comes packaged with your camera needs to install some drivers on your computer to prepare it for pictures directly off your camera. Just see what happens, insert the disk, and follow the istructions. After it has installed everything that's necessary, it might ask you to restart your computer, just do that. When your computer switches itself back on and you're back at your desktop, leave the computer alone (unless there are further instructions), pick up the camera, switch it on (you may need to insert the memory card into the camera, if it comes with one, you usually insert it in a small rectangular depression on the side of the camera. Try taking a picture, like you would with a normal camera, then insert the USB cable into the USB port (located on the back of your computer (some have them on the front too), and plug the smaller end of the lead into the camera. Ok, back to the camera, click start on the desktop, and look through your programmes, your most recent programme installation should be the last in the menu. click that, it should say Fugi camera or something along those lines. That should work, hope that was some help. If you need any more info, just ask.
Justin - the best advice I can give you is to read the Quick Start Instructions sheet that comes with your camera (if it has one.) Failing that then SurferDude's suggestions will be helpful, but at risk of going over what he has already said, here's how most Digital Cameras work.
The point and click function on digital cameras is much like a regular camera, only they will have a little tiny screen on the back, this screen can be used instead of the view finder or to review the pictures you have taken before connecting your camera to computer.
The other difference is that whilst an ordinary camera uses film, digital cameras capture your photos on a memory card. Mostly Cameras use a little thin disk about 1.5x1.5 inches this slides into the side of your camera. Unlike film though it can be wiped clean and reused, so you don't need a new memory stick for each new batch of photos.
In order to get your photos from your camera, your Computer needs to be able to talk to your camera, this requires 2 things:
1) A cable to connect the computer with the camera.
The cable is normally a "USB cable" these are distinctive because they have a thin, flat plug on one end which will connect to a slot in the back (or occasionally on the front) of your PC. The other end is normally smaller and square and this plugs into your camera.
2) Software Drivers
This is a computer program that "teaches" the computer how to communicate with the camera, this will normally be provided on a CD-ROM with your camera, though Windows may already have the necessary driver built in.
If you connect your camera with its USB cable to your computer and switch the camera and computer on, your computer will probably recognise that a new device has been connected and try to install the software drivers, it'll ask you for the CD-ROM disk if it can't find them.
Once the drivers have been installed, the next time you connect your camera to your computer, your computer will recognise the camera. Most Cameras then show up as a new drive under "My Computer", generally listed as a "removeable disk". If you double click the removeable disk and browse its contents you'll find the photos on your camera which you can copy into the "My Pictures" Folder located under "My Documents" Here they will be safely saved on your hard disk.
Once you get this far write me again and I'll tell you how to get your photos ready for the web.
Sorted
There isn't one.................all the directions have to say is that if such and such doesn't work use a "Quick Start." (But there are no "Quick Start directions anywhere.) Hey, really helpful to someone such as myself.
BUT.............thanks to you and Surferdude :-) with alot of careful study I bet I will somehow be able to do it myself.
Thank you ever so much for writing about this Sorted. I do really appreciate. I'll take those photos through a "Looking Glass" MYSELF if need be.
With all good wishes,
Justin~
Hi Surferdude-
You were so kind to have given me such in depth step by step instructions. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to write-up all of those directions. YOU should get the 25.00 reward! (No question about that one.)
I will be studying them step by step and will somehow get it done myself if it kills me! The heck with being so helpless on a matter like this.
Most likely, like anything else, once it is learned it will be a snap to do after that. The camera can even take short movies which are silent. Hey, wouldn't that be a riot to watch me climbing the walls and tearing my hair out in frustration all at the same time! lol :-) This camera is a "FUJIFILM FINEPIX A205 Digital Camera" if that means anything to you. 2.0 Million effective pixels. The guy at Office Depot where I bought it for 99.00 said that the price a few years ago was about 250.00............but improvements since then in Digitals have reduced the price alot on this model. I like simple things: "Aim and Shoot." Period!
Wish I had a printer so as to print out your instructions because every 2 minutes the screen blanks-out if left on and all I see is a bunch of FISH swimming around going "Blub-Blub-Blub!" (This thanks to the guy who installed this screen saver and set it for 2 minutes. Since, he was unable to find wherever he has put the fish..............hense I am stuck with the little (..........) swimming about in "aimless directions" doing nothing! Hey, at least one of them could get into a fight or something and nip anothers tail for something more exciting to watch like in a REAL FISHTANK! lol So, I will just write down all you have told me by hand and study it.
Can't thank you enough Surferdude. I DO believe you have saved the day with your expert instructions.
My best to you as always,
Justin~
You can loose the fish pretty easily, or reset the 2 minute activation timer by doing the following.
1) Minimise all windows so you are looking at your Blank Desktop (ie: as if you'd just started windows.)
2) Right Click anyway on the desktop that is not a button or icon. From the Menu choose "Properties", a window with your display settings will appear.
3) At the top of this window click on "Screen Saver" this shows you your screen saver settings. You can either get rid of the fish altogether by setting "No Screensaver" (Modern Monitors don't need them anyway.) or set the timer upto something more realistic like 20 minutes.
4) Click Apply to implement your changes, Click OK to close the window.
Voila - you've now lost Nemo!
Sorted
Thanks Sorted!
You made it a breeze. So now the "Blub,Blub,Blubs" are set to go on in 20 minutes...............and they do! (Now, why couldn't that Computor expert even find them?) Answer: he's nowhere as good as you!
Now for a question which may seem a bit "fishy." There is still no (Icon?) sign.........NOTHING on the main page with Marine Aquarium. Wonder where that ever went? It was there once, he messed with it and it vanished. And yet the "Blubs" still swim about. Can it be returned to the screen?
And as for the Camera..............this is a killer at present.
By tomorrow most likely I'll be able to get it to work. Surferdudes directions certainly seemed non-complicated.........not his fault in the slightest.........it's MY problem with this electronic stuff that drives me up a wall!
Once I DO get photos actually on the screen, I will be at a loss as to how to send them or make them available. Oh well, will cross that bridge tomorrow.
Both of you guys have been super helpful. You will never know my gratidude to both of you.
Justin~
Ps: Surferdude: No doubt you have heard of the great Pianist Horowitz? Ha ha ha.............both he and his wife HATED the Electronics of the day. A new recording of Horowitz was suddenly released and they both went spastic trying to make it play on their (then new) CD player. From reports I have read, they just dove right in and pressed all the buttons frantically in failed attempts to make it play. The VICTROLA of 1925 they understood.............but not this NOR the Phonographs that prceeded the CD's which could play 78's, 33's,45's and 16's. Wrong speeds were chosen.............the needle cartridge meant ONLY for the LP's was used on the 78's etc. And yet, look what he could do with a Piano!!!!!!!! To be excentric can at times be a major curse for sure.
No, he clearly wasn't an expert! :-)
Don't worry this step should be a breeze, just post a message when you've got the photos on screen, we'll talk you thru it from there. *grin*
Just got on this thing now and read your messages. Thank you both ever so much..................because of you I'll get through this thing yet...........perhaps today I hope.
Ha ha ha Surferdude...............at 4 playing around with a computor and not knowing what you are doing.........and that's how you learned! (Where I live that seems to be the story about ALL the young people that are good with Computors............but they can't (or won't) tell you how to do something.) And, on the "rare" ocassions when I have been treated(?) to one of their demos, they move so fast and do things so quickly I have no idea what just took place. And yet they smile and say: "See how easy it is?"
Now, is there a pill out there that can return me to 4 years of age? If so I should take it! lol
Hope you both are having a good hair day (to keep on topic here of course). :-)
Again, thanks so much.
Until later,
Justin
Hey Justin, I've just read all your replies.
Hope you can get it to work :D I first learned how to use a computer in 1990, at age 4! But guess how I learned how to use it?, it wasn't by reading the instruction manuals lol, I could barely read at tht age. It was by experimenting, just clicking on stuff, seeing what happens, and when I'd press something bad, I'd switch the computer off by the mains and switch it back on again (at the time I didn't see the potential damage that could cause but oh well, I was only 4 lol)
Just have a go at expreimenting with things. If youy're worried that if you mess things up you might need an engineer to call or something, I wouldn't worry. As long as you don't edit the windows folder (located deep in the C drive) = it's responsibe for how windows operates, you've got nothing to worry about, and any bad mistakes you make you'll probably forget about it after time.
As soon as you can view the prints you had taken with the digital camera on your monitor, ask us for more help, it'll be a breeze.
Thank you!
Yea, it was much easier for him to play his composition on the piano, it's very ironic in a way. I have heared and may have possibly seen Horrowitz, I'm not sure, I'll check with my mother about that just as soon as she is back from work.
Yeah, you're definitely at the point where you can now enjoy being a longhair. Grats, and well done!
Someday soon, I'll have to take a picture of myself on a windblown day, so all of you can get a sense of what you'll have to look forward to on windy days when you decide to wear your hair down. It's annoying, but pretty damn funny, and well worth the trouble!
hehehe
Great progress, Gollan! I admire your nonchalant attitude about wearing the buns in public. I might have the nerve to do such a thing, if only I had straight hair!
It's great to see you move on to your 25th month as well. It's always need seeing your progress, being the same total months as mine, yet the opposite type of hair.
As always, your progress is impressive and your ongoing experimentation is inspirational to us. The leftover curl looks good on you. Your tight bun does NOT in any way look feminine and would appear to be an answer for many on the board who want or need to present a traditional appearance for employment. Tying up a bun might be a good topic for your next pictorial instruction.
As always, thanks for sharing, not only your progress photos, but your enthusiasm and support. And I second your thoughts of appreciation to Victor and others for their tireless work in keeping this community focused, clean and fun.
Hi Gollan,
I've gotta say I always look forward to your progress pictures because your consistency and dillegnce in posting them provides such a good benchmark for those (like me) that follow in your path. I'm 7 months behind you, so its great to see I'm on course
Once again you photos are first class, and the bun style always looks great, not at all feminine.
Sorted
Great! Your hair seems relatively straight with some waving.
Is it getting lighter due to some extra sun exposure?
Or is it it the lighting?
Thanks for sharing.
And Good luck on your Journey!
Thanks for the feedback. I don't spend a lot of time in the sun but the ends of my hair are much ligher than the roots. I suspect that what time I do spend outdoors has a big effect on my hair color. I'll take a picture to show the big difference. I suppose I should be wearing a hat!
Looks great, Gollan. Your hair is about the same texture as mine, and we have similar hair lines. I also think we are about the same age. While I don't have any indication of balding, I have noticed receding lines at the temple. Have you notice any receding there, also, or is this the basic shape of the front of your hairline?
One more question: any instructions on tying the buns? You seem to have two different ones going there.
It's kind of nice to see somneone else's hair that is similar to one's own. As always, thanks for sharing the pics and updates.
The July pictures are exaggerating the height of my forehead. I actually have a lot of fine, lighter colored hairs at my temples that aren't visible in the latest pictures. My hairline has always been that shape. Even my baby pictures show a prominent 'widow's peak'. My hairline did thin a bit as I went from age 29 to 30 (which is normal) but has since stayed exactly the same. I will turn 42 in a few weeks.
The first bun really is called a 'bee-butt bun'. The two hair stick buns are called various names: 'regular bun', 'cinnamon bun', and 'hair stick bun' are some of the common names for this one style. I will give some serious thought to developing pictorial instructions for making these buns but the fact is there are already some good instructions out there. Just plug 'bee butt bun' and 'hair stick bun' into a search engine. Of course all of the existent bun instructions feature *female* hair and tend to position the bun higher so maybe there is room for my own male-specific instructions. Thanks for the feedback.
Great hair and website!
I once shared your concern about "corporate" appearance, but as the years went by, I found it doesn't matter.
Ed
Hi Gollan
Great pictures as always!
Congratulations on your growth, Gollan.
Looks great, and now you're really looking like a 'longhair'.
Is that your goal, or are you gonna keep it going?
wolfeyes
I like the bee-butt bun. OTOH, the geisha style (where the hair is tied up with sticks) is a bit too fussy for me.
However, under the topic started above by Sorted, I made the comment that it seems ironic when someone goes to the trouble of growing his hair out and then ends up keeping it tied back, so that in some ways he looks as though he might just as well have kept his hair short. Just a roundabout way of saying I prefer hair that's kept long and free flowing; it looks more dramatic and, as they say, "kewl" that way!
Gollan, you are the epitome of a well-groomed, masculine, long-haired male! Congratulations on your progress, and thank you so much for sharing your pics.
I love the bun on you. You may be interested to know that a young man who goes to my gym wears his very curly hair in a low bun to work out. Looks great, very tidy, and keeps his hair out of the way.
