As mentioned in my subject heading...my hair colour is turning red.
I have been getting comments lately from the neighbours that my hair colour is changing to red. When I was little, I used to have very straight brown hair, but now, my hair is curling and going blond...now one of the new neighbours was quoted, "Whose the kid with the long red hair?"
I don't understand this. Is it something I'm eatting. Body changes? The water?
I'm stumped.
Sun exposure maybe?
Yep I reakon its the sun. Mines the same as yours, I was brown when little. Then darker as older, nearly black in winter and reddy/blondy brown in summer, which I attribute to uv exposure and also lighting. If you dont like it and wish to revert back try Aveda black malva shampoo and cond. The poo gets rid of red tones whilst the conditioner give the darkness back. Alternatively u could try the brown coloured cond for more brown looking hair but I cant remember its exact name. I'm kinda liking my redish/blondish cast at the moment tho, im sure it will revert back in winter so I may just stick with it... it looks nice in the sun. You can prevent it with a hair moisturiser with ethylhexyl methoxcinnamate in it which filters out UVB light responsible for the change. UVA also I guess would play a role but I do not know of any hair products with avobenzone aka parsol in them.
Your hair colour does change sometimes as you get older - I was pure blond until I was about 5, then it started getting dark. I also had blue eyes, which are now green.
But as your hair grows longer, the light that is allowed at it, combined with the fact you don't need gel or wax in it, shows off its colour better.
The sun doea lighten it as well, depending on your hair, and the exposure you get. Mine has started changing at the bangs, and now has blond and some ginger/red streaks in it.
I think it's cool and makes it more interesting - there's no way I'm going to dye my hair anymore after hearing some horror stories on here!
-oh, you can get some shampoos (in Boots if you're in UK)- though I forget the brands - which bring out the red in your hair, even if it's more chestnut in colour, without dyeing it or damaging it!
Might be worth a go.

It might just be the lenght of the hair that allows it to be easier seen!
As you can see on my picture, I'm not very redhaired myself either, but the sun will sometimes bring out shades of red in some strands of hair.
Weird thing is, I don't of any real redhaired people in my family, but my skin is similar to many with red hair. Quite pale, and doesn't colour easily.
All the posibilities mentioned thus far are causes for hair color change. Mine might be described as light brown or dirty blond, but the hair farthest away from my scalp is definitely blond--exposure to the sun and elements.
You should also be aware, as I suspect you are relatively young, that your body changes including hormonal (which can take years) can trigger hair coding in your genes, also. I have a cousin who grew up with me, same age. In our mid to late teens, his very fine, relatively thin hair suddenly became extremely curly and lighter in color. No chemicals, not attempt to do this. He had a full afro in the 1970's, like it or not. Fortunately for him, the style was in. No one would have guessed it,and it was clearly puberty and the change in hormones that triggered something in his genetic coding that made his hair do this.
I would suspect the same possibility for you if it is turning red at the roots and not just on the ends.

Thank you very much for you insight. I guess I could look stupid for a little bit and where a hat to avoid the sun and talk from the neighbours.
