As the regulars know, I am a teacher (high school). School begins this Friday for us, and so this week I am at school preparing. Yesterday I was walking down a long hall. A young man (late teens) was walking along behind me, and said something. I turned around, and he said: hey dude, really great hair.
It surprised me, and before I could say anything, he said, "the tail, man, really great hair. I wish I could grow mine like that but the job won't allow it".
I thanked him. Asked about his job. Chick-Fil-A. Around here some folks refer to it as "The Holy Chicken". Apparently the corporation takes on a very religious atmosphere, and I suspect that requiring short-haired males is part of the deal.
In any regard, I said: well this is my job, and they are cool with the hair. He smiled and again remarked positively on my hair.
I know we do this thread often enough, but it was just another nice reminder that there are those around us who like the look of longhaired men, and are willing to day so. That this was a student in my building was even nicer. Who knows? Maybe he'll give some thought to going into teaching!

Hmm, I'm applying to Chick Fil A soon. That might be a problem for my hair but I need money, I know the one nearby is hiring and sometimes being able to have a job is very important lastly I don't have to ask Sundays off, I allready get them off. So....yeah.
What do you teach? I'm a high school English teacher. Well, WAS a teacher and will be again soon in another city.
Around my old school, the students loved my long hair and had even braided it (as in corn rows).
You know what gets to me the most in your message? Chik-Fil-A. Now, I love their sandwiches. Always have. I had no idea they were like that.
Okay - so Chik-Fil-A doesn't like long hair, eh? Hmmmm. You know, they never told me that when I was PAYING for my food! I guess long hair is okay if you're giving money to them, but NOT okay if they give money to you!
I guess many companies are like that. "We don't want those long haired types 'round here, well, unless they're givin' us money!"
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I think I've had my last Chik-Fil-A sandwich.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
As you said, though, maybe he'll give some thought to teaching! I know for me it's been a very rewarding experience. Every day you see something good, something positive in the life of a kid. Graduation night is great! There's nothing like getting hugs from students after they've crossed the stage, thanking you for helping them reach what is for them a major milestone.
Oh - and congrats on the compliment. May many more follow!
I teach Latin. And I'm good! LOL! It's a content area that has a long tradition of stodgy old farts and fartesses who numb minds. But, it doesn't have to be. I agree with you, totally, that teaching is such an exciting kind of work. Tomorrow my students show up, and that makes the headache of meetings and paper work worth it. Tomorrow the real work and joy of teaching begins.
As for Chick-Fil-A, couldn't agree more. But, since you are a patron, it might be worth a letter to corporate headquarters noting that you understand they have a no-longhair policy for employees, and since they have not refused your money as a patron, you find it impossible to keep eating there. It would be interesting to see what kind of response letter you got. Maybe you could share it with us!
I notice that more and more ads are including longhaired men. We are showing up in the economy, in other words. That counts for something. I'd love to be able to look up this kid in my school and say--policy change! Longhaired men unite!
