Picture Purged
I last posted a progress pic in June, and took my most recent pics about 3 weeks ago. I don't have a digital camera so I have to sneak my parents', haha. Which is when I get a chance.
I graduated from university and begin my degree for mathematics teaching (high school level) in a few weeks. I'll have practice time in the schools shortly and I am concerned that my look will not be professional enough. And I get mistaken for a woman by people that don't look too closely (I am 5'2").
I am making a decision in the next two weeks, comments are welcome.
I..wouldn't really worry about being as I have a friend..thats heavily tatted up..peirced up galore with facial peircings and what not, and was hired as a computer teacher for kids. If thats not un-professional..I dont know what is lol. Teaching jobs seem to be relitivly leanant though. But I guess it all depends on your area.
I am a teacher (16 years), age 44, and have longhair down to lower shoulder-blades. A couple of things:
1) Longhair doesn't mean non-professional. I am a professional, and I have longhair.
2) What country are you in? How might longhair be read in your country for a teacher?
3) How long will your program take? As you get older, your appearance may change, especially with regard to beard which helps in the "looks like a woman" issue.
4) Finally, and most important: it's really more about attitude than hair length. If you go in the door with confidence and professional demeanor, that will communicate.
Good luck.
Robert
Hi Robert, we have communicated before through here. I remember your story you related about your appearance during the interview versus once you started working several months later.
Canada, and I don't know about the latter as I never saw a long haired male teacher when I was in high school. I do note that in my correspondence from the Faculty about professional appearance they never onced mentioned hairstyle, only attire.
I have a bachelor's degree and the teaching degree here lasts a year. I am 26 years old, unable to grow a beard yet but perhaps in my thirties...
Yeah, I need to work on the confidence.
You seem to have the perfect hair for growing it long.
Are you wearing hair pins in this photo? Parting your hair more to one side
might look a bit more masculine on you.
Have you tried a tail (even a small one?)
Not being tall makes it easier to be mistaken for a female (at least from the back).
But don't worry about it. The only people who count are the ones who
know you...
and after a while they adjust to you new look.
Good Luck!
Nope, no pins in the photo. I do have cowlicks on both sides at the temple and I seldom bother to try to blow dry them out. I have tried a tail a couple of times but never in the sight of other people.
Woman? Ha ha ha..........! The same happened to myself in the Awkward Stage when a Dept Store Manager came down the isle and asked me: "excuse me mam, could you just move a bit so that I can get down the isle?" (I was kneeling looking at something and my legs were blocking the way.) I answered in the highest pitched voice I could muster:"Certainly Sir." You should have seen the look on his face when he got past me...........what a riot! :-) And, I am 6' tall at that!
I really wouldn't fret all that much about it. Your hair looks GREAT and you certainly look like a guy to myself. If it were me I would continue growing it out. You have fantastic hair!
Woman w/short hair sometimes are mistaken for Men. (To all of this I simply say "so-What.") YOU know what you are, and if Long Hair brings joy into your life I certainly wouldn't cut it because of a few remarks of mistaken identity. Besides, if cut short it is possible that you may STILL be mistaken!
Please, please, please...............don't change a thing because of an observation I am about to make. In no way am I downing you or trying to tell you to change anything........no way. It "might" be because of the style glasses you wear? Only a guess.
Good luck with your studies and a fine teaching profession.
Your hair look good on you.
I've been working in a world-wide telecomm company for the past 6 years. I had shoulder length hair and cut it for this job. Since working here I've been surprised at what people wear (hair, earings, etc.) in the corporate workplace. In this day and age some companies are more lenient than others. I would try the long hair, tied back maybe, and dress for the job. I agree with the other poster who said it's more of how you carry yourself..... or it should be. Good luck and be proud.
