Something I tried yesterday. I gathered the top portion of my hair and tied it up. Then I tied the rest of the sides and back into a braid and let the top portion fall down again.
It works like an undercut but without "cutting".
The braid is hidden by my hair at the back.
The result? No poofiness, no more 1970's look, hair falls and sits much better, no copious quantities of gel needed... life's great, la la la
Hope to post pics soon. FTR my hair is nearly at shoulder blade length.

Just recently got into tying my hair back and not caring much how it looks - siding with comfort.
