Actually it's two tips that I've found to work well.
(note, I'm not sure how these would work with straight/wavy hair)
1) When you can get most of the hair into a ponytail but not all of it, take the locks that don't fit in and wrap them around locks that do. (I've just recently got to the point that I don't have to do this anymore)
2) When using an elastic, don't double-wrap it. I've found that it's hard to get out when it's like that, and that more hairs are pulled out. Just putting the elastic around the ponytail once may feel loose, but curly hair holds on to it amazingly well, and keeps it from slipping.
Perhaps these may help a bit.

It works even better to wrap the shorter bits under the longer ones. They stay in better that way.
Good point. It is always a good idea to remove pony bands carefully to avoid breakages.
That's exactly what I'm doing to my hair right now. Mind you, a lot of mine's dreaded so it all holds together pretty well anyway...
Nice tips though, I had to go through trial and error to discover the best way to do a ponytail for really curly hair...
I've always been a fan of dreadlocks, do you happen to have a photo of yours?

Not at the moment...the only pic of me online's about a year old. I#ll try and get one up at some point though...
i've tried this, but the hair eventually works it's way out...but it works for a while, so that's good.
i have been double-wrapping mine...and when i'd take it out there'd be a few hairs attached. it seems to me it'd be too loose without doubling it, but i'll give it a shot. what kind of bands do you use?
I use elastics without the metal sleeve that breaks the hair. Those can be double-wrapped without damage to the hair. Of course you have to be careful when taking them off.
