Well just got home from a 3 hour interview and was accepted for a new job at 36k pr yr its a step up from my $8.00 pr hour job and my new boss didnt comment on my shoulder length hair once.Which shows that by letting the real person show through and not worrying about what others may think the real person shines through. And If you worry that they may be thinking bad stuff about you then youll probably do something to make them feel that way. my advise is that longhair is part of you and is what makes you an individual. And there is nothing wrong with it.So dont think there is and youll be a happy succesful longhair and maybe youll change some negative personal opinions of others and not even know you did it.

You wrote a very beutiful and encouraging letter; people are to be seen inside. There are also many bad and stupid people with short hair!
Many wishes for your new job !!

Way to go! I've been asked if I'd cut my hair and/or shave my beard for a job. My response is to ask them to hand over my resume and application so I can add something, then exuse myself politely by saying I could not work for a company that focused on such issues and leave WITH my resume and application. They usually protest they need them back. I just say, no and leave.
I haven't had a problem with getting a job with long hair in the last 7 years since going back to school to become a therapist. I've had 7 jobs in 7 years with out a hassle (not consecutive jobs, worked more than one place at a time) and have many more interviews. I even do volunteer work as a mobile crisis counselor for the Fire Dept. and they never hassled me except to warn me that the masks won't seal well with my beard.
I've worked in prison with long hair (that did piss off the corrections people but they forgot to write a dress code for contractors), I've worked in big name psychiatric hospitals where I wore a necktie with long hair, I've worked under contract with the probation dept. where I had to wear a necktie but long hair was okay. I now work at a walk-in psychiatric crisis center where the owner of the agency has very long hair.
I didn't dump 27 years of corporate America jobs in order to let my hair grow long, but when I figured out who I really was and what I really wanted to do, the long hair fit right in.
So, my unsolicited advice to those who feel their long hair may not be welcome at work is to buy a copy of What Color is Your Parachute? or go take a career test, then follow your dream.
yeah i used to think that the hair would keep me from getting a decent job too. started growing it out 4 years ago, working for a piddly ass restaurant chain that paid me 8 bucks an hour to do the books. they gave me nothing but crap about the hair, and worked my poor ass to death seven days a week, while bitching about my "appearance". only problem is...I have a brain. got a job in a bigger house, and they didn't even question it when the hair went past the shoulders. also doubled my income (with a bonus)in the first year. now they transferred me to their biggest unit in Seattle, fine waterfront dining, really messed up books, to fix all the problems. got the ususal funny looks, (he's a longhaired pot smoking freak), but within a week they all loved me. and their books are nice and straight, thanks to the longhaired freak too. I'll break 43 grand this year. so the next time anyone tells to cut the hair for a job, i'll take off my hat, say imagine that, hah me? workin for you!
