Hi All,
OK, I am having this arguement with my long haired friend, about whether the hair follicle grows from the root only (I say that) or from the end as well (??? he says that). He says that because a hairdresser said that to him once. My guess is that they either has a misunderstanding or the hairdresser lied to try to get him to trim his hair more often. This all came out of the arguement of how split ends occur... I am tired of arguing with him, and I couldn't find anything specific on the Internet about exactly how hair grows, so can you PLEASE say that hair doesn't grow from both sides. I need many replies :).
Thanks :)
Ivan
If it grew from the end, what would happen if you cut it? It would not grow any more. Does hair continue to grow from that end when its cut? no. Otherwise, that poor barber/stylist would be swimming/drowning in other peoples hair. What a way to die.
Your friend doesn't really know how hair works. lol It's obvious it grows from roots. If a hairdresser told me that I would know they were lying so I'd trim my hair. Too bad for them =)
Your hair only grows from the follicle which is below the skin line. Once hair emerges from the follicle it is dead which means no of the hair that is VISIBLE can grow at all. Absalom
Tell your friend, if he is so certain, to dip the end of a single hair in bleach so it turns white. Then he can watch as it 'grows'.
What age is your friend? Twelve? Does he think the world is flat, potatos can cure warts, witches should be found and burned etc???
Really. If he's over the age of 18, tell him he's a moron. If not, let his imagination run free - younger people should enjoy the liberty while they have it.

Hair needs nutrients to grow. Nutrients are distributed throughout the body by blood vessels. If your hair could grow from the ends, there would have to be a blood supply all the way to the end. Alternatively, the hair would have to draw fluid to the end via capilary action, like a plant.
When you cut your hair, it doesn't bleed and no fluid comes out, right?
So if it doesn't get food from your body it would have to get it from the air, like an "air plant" that you see hanging off trees in the US Southeast. But if that were true, you could hang some hair off a tree and decades later the tree would have a fantastic 'do.
In other words, NO WAY does hair grow from the end.
Okay. Hair grows "only" in the middle area of ea. strand. :-0
lol
Thank you, he finally gave up! And, he also admitted that hair doesn't grow faster after you cut it, after I gave him some website to read... And, he is 20 :)))
