Well I just wondered if I was the only one with this habit. But since I first decided to grow out my hair a while ago, and even now that it's having to go through the grow phase again, I find that every time I pass by a mirror, car window, television set, or any type of reflective surface, I just have to look in it to see how my hair is! Grrrr, I hate it, as it makes me feel quite vain. But it is a bad habit that I must break. Anyone else got this, or have a good way to get over it? I suppose just forcing myself not to look would be the best!
I don't see anything wrong with that.
As my brother used to say, I've never seen a mirror I didn't like!
Like you, I started looking at my hair on any reflective surface I ever walked by since I started growing my hair out. Now my hair is almost mid-back and I still do it. Perhaps we're perfectionists. Or we're simply compulsive. There's really nothing wrong with looking at your hair, and you're not vain, quite the CONTRARY. If you were full of yourself, you'd be more likely NOT to check it often, whereas a person who's NOT confident is more likely to check often.

Same thing here. I think perhaps when I reach a goal length and have "stabilized" I might not do that. Does anybody on this board who has reached goal-length recall looking a lot while growing out, and then stopping?
I'm concerned about being vain too, and would really like to just be able to walk around and not think about it. I think the fact that society in general makes a big deal out of it causes us to absorb some of that attitude and make a big deal out of it too, so we stare at ourselves sometimes just like they stare at us, except we do it in admiration.
Some day I hope to walk around with full confidence and, while still caring about my appearance, not obsess over it. Is anybody "there yet"? Who was it that said "you'll grow as much underneath as you do on top"?
Yep all the time... just accept and dont make it look obvious if you can. You my think of it as being vain but thats cos your not used to having something that needs constant maintainance like longer hair, if it looks mess ya gotta fix it.

It is an important part of *adjusting* to longer hair.
As your hair grows longer, you will need to adjust to it in many ways:
washing, conditioning, styling, combing, keeping it in place,
restraining it by means of hair ties, etc.
But LOOKing at ( and checking on) your hair is also a necessary
part of coming to terms with the 'new you'--that is, the Longhair
you are transforming yourself into.
Can you just imagine yourself being in a place without mirrors
and then suddenly seeing your reflection after say, a year?!
It would be an absolutely SHOCK! So you NEED to get
lots of feedback from your mirrors, etc. in order
to mature and change GRADUALLY into that new & fairly rare creature
called a Longhair!
So don't worry about it...ENJOY!
Neuropsychologists have found that there is a place in our brains where we store an image of ourselves. We are constantly checking to see that all of the parts are there. The mind has major problems if a part is missing. Read up on 'phantom limb syndrome' if you want details.
Once your hair grows out to the length where it will remain, in time you will mirror-gaze a lot less, but you will still do it. It is part of a 'checking up' that you do with all body parts.
When I've lost weight I've experienced a similar 'looking in the mirror more' situation, and it too subsides after awhile. As with the long hair one, it feels really good though to see something 'new' in that image that you really like!
So, yeah, enjoy!

I think you answered my question. It's like something new planted in the garden, a new car, a new house, etc. You take pictures of it and talk about it when it's new, then it becomes a more ordinary part of the landscape.
No, I have this habit too.
My only concern is that if I'm walking and looking at a window reflection in the street I'll walk into something.
Unfortunately, for the vainity thing, that is exact what it is. Vainity is having or showing undue or excessive pride in one's appearance or achievements. I have pride in our hair and how we look.
Don't think of hair for the moment, but look at someone who may have gotten a new pair of sunglasses and they check themselves all the time in the windows to see how cool they look...they seem a little conceited.
So like you, I am too worried about being vain. My only advise is to reduce the number of time you look...however check often during windy days. lol.
