ok... alot of you know me (atleast seen one or 2 posts from me in the past) anyway My mission from the begining of hair growth was to grow long enough for a pony tail... I dont know why, i just think it looks very good on guys (very proffesional and well kept) ..... Anyway. i know can get all of my hair into my pony tail so i am very happy.... Except Watching some shows i noticed... women seem to really dislike men who have pony tails........ Why? Anyway the commen question comes...... Will i be insulted badly becouse my hair is in a pony tail...... I mean i can defintly take my fair share of insults (through the year of growth, i towel dried my hair daily and it became very curly almsot afro-like...... as long as i dont towel dry/rub it... it falls into place, very nice wavy/curly hair) But i just really dont feel like geting mocked 24/7 for something i thought looked really cool
And the HUGE QUESTION........... You think anyone is going to try to snip it off or cut it with scissors.... you know like they move right at the base of the pony and simply cut
I've never had that happen. And my hair is waist length.
Wear it alot in a pony tail or braided.
If the situation looks threatening just tuck your hair
under your shirt/jacket.
Thank you got your words guys.... See im not afriad of being insulted.... That comes with the territory of long hair... I would just be very annoyed to be insulted more with a pony tail then with my hair just droping down.....
I guess its just like geting a wierd haircut.... after a few days people wont even notice or mock it
To your first question - a definite yes. Most men look great with ponytails, ranging from businessmen in suits to students in t shirts.
Some people react badly to them - I have worn a ponytail every day for almost ten years, and I would think there are as many who seem to like it as who don't. The most amusing reactions are from (mainly middle class) children who have obviously been living in some sort of ivory tower for most of their lives, who stare open mouthed. Children can also provide the best compliments. I recently overheard a girl of about 10 say "Mummy, can I have hair hike his?"
When you first wear a ponytail in public, you'll probably feel very self conscious. After the first month or two, you'll feel strange if you don't.
As to an attack from behind, it's unlikely. If you are in a place where you wouldn't fear a mugging, even those who don't like your hair aren't going to risk an assault charge. If you have to go somewhere where violence happens a lot, take the sensible precautions you would anyway. Tucking your hair inside your collar might be a good idea too so that you don't look conspicuous.
Hope that helps.
Please don't use what you hear or see on t.v. as an indicator of what real people think or say. The most real thing you said in your post is that YOU think a man in a ponytail looks really cool. Go with that. If you like it, and you wear what you like, you will communicate that to others who may not even have developed an attitude yet.
If you go around looking for others' approval before you decide how you will dress and groom, you will not find it and you will lose yourself in the process.

I think its swings and roundabout, some women like longhair, others don't, some women who like longhair hate to see men tie it back. I think one of our lady members Carla pointed out the irony that so many men spent years growing long hair only to tie it back in a ponytail all day everyday and look no different than they did with short hair. (From the front at least.)
I think there's also a stereotype about men with ponytails who are in professional evironments. The stereotype seems to be that the clean shaven well dressed guys with ponytails at work are arrogant and pompus. (I should point out that this is a "short-ponytail" stereotype.) Hence the expression: "Under every ponytail is an asshole."
I guess what I'm saying is when anyone says they "Hate people with 'whatever'..." what they are really doing is identifying a stereotype they associate with this image which they do not like.
Before you jump to conclusions about what women like and dislike maybe you should be sure you know what they are really refering to when they make satements like: "I hate men with ponytails." Its probably got more to do with the pompous jerk in her office (who has a ponytail) who tried to make a pass at her last week. People don't really hate descriptions, they hate people who match a description, then when the statement comes out the line between the two gets blurred.
No its unlikely, infact I find that the ponytail makes everyone happy. The people that wanted you to cut your hair rather than grow it long will sort of accept you, because your hair "looks neat" in a ponytail. And the people that admired your flowing locks will still do so because they know its only a hair-band away.
Only a Neo-Nazi jerk, unless your partial to hanging around with them your unlikely to fall victim to such an attack.

When I decided to grow my hair out, all I wanted was a ponytail too. I didn't think much of leaving my hair down. Anyway, from my experience, in my ummm... 3 years of wearing ponytails, only perhaps 2 women expressed their dislike (or hatred) of my hair while others said that the long hair fit me really well. Now. Those 2 women were skanks and there's no way I would have had anything to do with them anyway, so I didn't care much. NOW, the interesting thing was that when I got my hair cut and I lost my entire ponytail (almost a foot long) and some more, nobody really noticed. So I think that people (at least women) don't really care 'bout your hair... I mean, if they did, they would have said something, right? My teacher never noticed until the end of the semester. So my answer to your question is YES, ponytails on guys are great. I think it is a very professional look with a sense of fun.
And the thing about women on TV disliking men with ponytails? Screw it. Women on TV are usually portrayed as an emotional timb bomb who are too picky for their own good but then luck out in the end and get to marry a hot millionaire. Not a single grain of truth.
I was never afraid of people trying to cut my hair. Maybe because I have a temper and everybody knows it so they never even joke about it. But I am convinced I am capable of at least maiming who ever thinks it's fun to cut my ponytail... I don't think you should worry about it, the odds are slim.
Hang in there. Good luck to you.
Love,
Kiat T.
Well what can I say apart from your advice to our friend here is absolutely first class! I too would have said exactly the same things.
I think (and this is only my opinion), a guy with long hair, will look good either way...besides...in summer when it's so damn hot, it might be easier to wear it in a ponytail - just so you don't "overheat". I have that in summer...I almost never wear it loose during the day when it's so hot...at night I might let hang loose again...

TV shows are not real. The big money controls everything including the studio "audience", what clothes people wear, what is parts of the film are cut out, which of many cameras is selected for viewers to see through, and many other things. I wish everyone would get rid of their TVs. Some shows encourage hair cuts to sell hair cuts for the advertisers; some shows encourage long hair to sell more hair care products for the advertisers.
In my experience I find far fewer insults with my hair in a pony tail. Fewer insults than before I had long hair. My hair tied in a pony tail doesn't draw as much attention as it did when it was long but too short to tie into a pony tail.
I wear often my hair in a ponytail - at work or when it's too hot - and I don't care what others say about it, or about my long hair in general.
I put a guy 30 days into the slammer for trying to do that to me.
