Hi everyone!
I have got a problem! My hair is about mid-back-lenght now and I just don't know how to sleep. Everytime I go to bed I worry, if the way my head lies is bad for my hair. If I put it in a pony tail I can't sleep and if not I have an ugly mop of tangles on my head the next morning. How do you sleep comfortable without damaging your hair?
And I have got an onther problem. My hair is bleaching. during this summer my haircolor has changed from nearly black to middle brown. What can I do against it? Is it nessecary to protect my hair?
Hope you can help me!
Thanks

I find the best way to avoid sleeplessness and tangles at night is to do a loose braid which has a pony tie only at the lower end.
Bleaching from the sun won't do any damage - my hair goes from mid brown to almost twhite after a few months of strong sunlight, and it makes for an interesting contrast between the hair on the top which is light at the underneath hair which is darker. Some people would pay a fortune to get that sort of style!
I have a grey forelock which, with long hair tied back reaches across the top and back of my head...every summer, my grey, almost white hair turns a light shade of yellow, which I assume is because of the sun...so, it appears that I have blond hair on the top of my head with a light brown underneath...I think it is a nice combination.
Hi, well i dont have that length of hair but ive heard of people braiding it, which you said you dont like. I also heard somewhere that satin pillows can help. I'm currently lemming for a black satin pillow case to go with my black bedspread i havent got around to buying yet.
As for the bleaching, I know what you mean! I have/had very dark hair, now it has redtones and all sorts cos of the sun. Unfortunatly there is not much you can do about it. For prevention there are hair moisturisers (like john frieda secret weapon) that contain a sunscreen filter. However this more than not tends to be ethylhexylmethoxycinnamte which is a UVB filter, however this is photounstable and degrades after a couple of hours exposure if a photostabiliser is not present. This also only 'protects' against UVB rays but UVA rays are also responsible, as far as I know there are not UVA protecting formulations around, and the matter of photostability is more complicated here as you would like to have say avobenzone and ethylhexylmethoxycinnamte together, yet they act antagonistic in the presense of each other and become photounstable....
So basically what im saying is that there is not sufficient protection you can get besides covering your hair with say a cap. To 'fix' the bleached part you could either dye it or you could tint it with the likes of aveda black malva condioner or there is a colour depositing condioner by redken now too.
You are right, braiding my hair before I go to bed is the best way to avoid tangles. Unfortunately I am too stupid to do it on my own hair, but sometimes some girls at work do it, when they play with my hair (btw, its a great feeling, when someone else is playing with your hair)
When braided I never have any tangles.
And with the bleaching:
I decided to wear a cap or bandana, when the sun is shining very hard, I also put the rest of my hair into my T-shirt.
Thats the eayiest solution!

I wouldn't worry too much about how to sleep. Find a comfortable way for you. My hair is about the same length as you describe. I am very warm-natured, so sleeping on top of my hair gets too hot, especially in the summer. IN the winter, it's kind of nice to have the hair down around my neck and shoulders. Most of the time, sleeping on my side, I pull the hair out behind me and over the pillow--if you can imagine how that would look. When I roll over, I just pull the hair around behind me. Obviously at some point in the night I become oblivious to all this.
I don't wake up with tangles, but my hair is not curly.

Hi Robert!
I don't sleep very deep and often rub around in my bed, maybe thats the reason for the tangles. I also have very wavy hair. I HATE to have so much tangles every morning.
But I agree with you, Hair is wonderful in winter!

At night I put my hair into a loose topnot on the crown (flat spot where the top and back of the skull meet) of my head, tied with a scrunchy (frilly fabric-covered elastic). The loose topknot style I tie starts with a ponytail jutting straight out of the top of my head, with the scrunchy looped around the base. Then I loop the scrunchy one more time and pull the middle of the ponytail part-way through the scrunchy leaving a loop of hair on top of my head. I vary the position slighty from night to night to avoid tying in exactly the same place. (An alternative would be to make a bun, so instead of pulling the loop of hair through you would just wrap the ponytail around the base and tuck the end under the scrunchy).
Your way to tie your hair at night seems to be a very good solution. But I don't know what my girlfriend would say if I look like a Teletubby, with a crazy pony-tail on top of my head. On the other hand it wouldn't be bad, cos she can't lay on my hair at night anymore (I can tell you, it's a torture, when soneone else is laying on your hair :-) )
I think I'll try it. And when it's dark noone will see!
thanks for your advice!

Your ideas are really good - do you reckon the above example would make a good bonus photo for your site in the future? I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one who'd love to see it, even though my hair isn't long enough for that yet :(

Here is the simplest way to protect your hair when sleeping. Put multiple soft cloth hair ties at 3 to 4 inch intervals(segmented ponytail) along the entire length of your hair. For mid back hair you would need about 5 of them. It will stop tangles and is much easier than braiding. Absalom
Hi MMMBop!
Sometimes I sleep with my hair in a 'standard' ponytail tied at the base of my neck (usually when it's hot in the summer) but in the winter I love to sleep with it down the side of my face and round my neck. I have wavy hair and find that as long as I brushed it the night before it looks as good the next morning. However, I think that this is heavily reliant on the fact that if I have a good night's sleep I wake up in exactly the same position I went to sleep in. I think I must not move at all while I'm sleeping!
The only problem I sometimes find with sleeping with it in a pony is that I end up with a huge wave, much bigger than the others, roughly around the halfway point between the start and end of my hair. I also sleep on my side.
Hope this helps,
rm
if you really want to knwo this you woudl ask a girl with long hair. theres really no secret to sleeping on your hair, you jsut go to bed. but brushing it before you go to bed helps to keep out tangles and washing it with good coitioner helps to keep it from breaking. other wise, dont worry about it, you wont damage your hair by sleeping on it.
