I'm overweight and i feel that I'd look better if i lost weight. However, i don't want to lose any hair. I'm 19, so hairloss might not be so serious, but what should I do?
If your weight loss is healthy, that is, if your eating is balanced, protein included, vegetables and fruit, and you are not fasting or skipping meals, suppliment with vitamins if you need to, then you should not lose hair as a part of losing weight. Hair loss as a part of weight loss occurs when your body senses that it is under attack or crisis. Fasting, fad diets, unhealthy suppliments, anorexia, bulemic episodes as well as chronic illnesses can cause hair loss. The hair loss is then a symptom of the disease.
Over the years I have found that one of the less extreme forms of higher proetein, lower carbohydrates is a good way to both lose weight and maintain body weight. I work out with weights and the two are a good combination.
Good luck.

Over the past couple of months I've lost about ten pounds (4.5kg) and it has not had any noticeable effect on my hair. I didn't go on any crash diet, I just increased my exercise and tightened up my daily calorie intake. I always take a high-quality vitamin and make an effort to get a full, restful sleep.
As long as you do it in a healthy way, you should be fine.
I've lost plenty of pounds without any effect to my hair (and I've went from a size 42" to 36" in jeans, so it's noticable).
Eat better, excersize more.
I wish I could make myself do the 2nd part :)
Unless you go on a starvatinn diet (not recommended) your hair should benefit from your being healthier by looking better and growing better. If you lose weight by increasing exercise and eating more healthy foods, your whooe body should benefit from hair via stomach to toes.
I heared the Atkins diet is very bad for hair. Aparently it causes thinning, as well as other major crash diets, at least that's what I've gathered from long hair personals.
I put myself on a low fat and low sodium diet to bring my blood pressure back to normal. I have heard that low fat diets are bad for hair condition, but I didn't find that. However, I do take vitamin B amongst other vitamins, and B is supposed to be good for hair.
So if you diet, take vitamin B. In fact, take it anyway.
I don't know what the Atkins diet will do for your hair, but I do know it carries significant health risks. Cutting down carbs won't hurt you as far as I know, but some Atkins meals are very high fat. It is a fact that a high fat diet, especially high saturated fat, will block your arteries, which can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, and strokes.
I know people who are losing weight by following the Atkins diet, but I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole! Sorry!
I think that the South Beach diet is maybe an attempt to acheive the same results without killing the dieter, so you may want to give it a look.
Of course, I'm a middle aged hippy, so I'm old enough to have experienced the negative effects of my past food consumption.
I lost 22 pounds this summer (since May up 'til now) and it really didn't affect my hair. Just make sure you maintain your health (by eating right and stuff) 'cause THAT's important to your hair (and life too, to look a the larger picture). Diet safely!
Love,

sometimes NO diet works
i mean look at me, i eat VERY healthy and i exercise daily, and still i can't loose my gut, sometimes you just are stuck with it
like me, i'm the world's only overweight vegetarian HAHA.
but anyway if your going to diet just make sure you get all your needed stuff so you know your not deficiant
mabye a good multi-vitamin would do the trick
Have you tried weightlifting?
yes, actually i used to a LOT more then i do now
aside from bench pressing i can't really do it anymore on account of my back
(2 discs fused and 1 is slipped)
my weight naturally tends to go to my gut, the only thing that would keep it off was crunches and situps, since the problems are lower back i cannot do that anymore,
also squats are out of the question too because of my destroyed knees
ahhh the joys of a failed career in pro-wrestling......
thats why i have been focusing on my music so much lately
its kinda my backup skill LOL
Hey dude :-)
I really dont think that losing weight will affect your hair negatively at all, as long as it is lost safely. By safely I mean by a combination of exercise and a balanced diet (not just a sudden reduction in calories)
Good luck with the weight loss!
