Hello, this is my first time posting a message on this board, but I've actually read alot of posts beforehand. I have been growing my hair out for the past few months, and currently it looks like a bad 1970's poofing afro of gigantic proportions. I've tried greasing it down, and I've tried not shampooing my hair for a few days (in order to achieve the handsome greasy hobo style). The problem is my hair looks horrible no matter what way I style it. I have thick thick wavy hair that poofs out when not wet. This is my second attempt at growing out my hair, since I had cut it off previously when it got to this awkward stage. My parents dislike my hair at this point, they make fun of the flips in my hair and say I look wierd or funny. I also enjoy a cruddy goatee sometimes but it comes in really patchy and bad, my parents hate that too. Yet, now I am off to college, so I think I'll just continue growing it. The problem is I just got diagnosed with OCD and I realize that I constantly think about cutting my hair. I want a rock and roll type look, since I love grunge music, especially the Pixies and Pearl Jam.
So, in conclusion, could any of you guys give opinions of my current hair, perhaps tell me what I should do, I'm kinda undecided...Thanks I appologise if my post appears rambling
Let me just say that I am also a huge fan of Seattle's finest. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Temple of the Dog, Nirvana. The early 90's was a special time in music that will never come again...
But to your hair, if your already thinking of cutting you'll probably end up doing it anyway. But eventually you'll want to grow it long again, so you'll have to start the whole process over again. Really, its a quick 14 months to grow it out. (time goes by so fast. Im on month #7 already) If it looks like shit after that time, then cut it and enjoy the reaction of your fellow college peers, including women.
P.S start taking progress pics with your webcam. It will make growing it out exciting. Also check out a few sites where fellow board members have posted their progress:

I sadly don't own a webcam, so therefore no progress pics for me, ahh well. My hair isn't that long yet, only about 4.5 or so months of growth. Yet, for some reason everyone thinks my hair is too long. I should also mention that I plan on minoring in theatre which means I'll probably have to cut my hair short at somepoint. Man, I am now starting to wonder why I began growing out my hair in the first place. Well, if worse comes to worse, I can always give myself a shorter but still slightly shaggy haircut. Thanks for the advice, I'll try to keep my hair growing for as long as possible, then who knows. I just know that don't want to return to the short spiky hair that I have had previously. Girls thought it looked nice, but all my friends said it made me look like a huge MTV Tool!!! hahahaha....
Thanks once again for all your help, this board rocks
I started using a spray gel when I get out of the shower. Brush/comb it back and tie it into a ponytail while it's wet. Even if it's a top knot - see wolfeyes. After it dries and you take the elastic band out - your hair will hang almost perfectly straight. - That maybe just my experience, but it certainly cured the fly aways.
