Does anyone else here find that when they use too much conditioner that it seems to build up a lot fatser? Recently I've felt like my hair is getting really heavy and gunky, and it may be because I use too much conditioner. Even on days when I just rinse with water, it seems a bit heavy and not as free as it should be. Could using excessive amounts of conditioner be a cause for this? I'm thinking maybe less is more.
This is not uncommon, so yeah, you probably should back off a little from conditioner. I usually recommend using it only from the neck and down, but others with very long hair like mine suggest from the ears and down. Using conditioner on your scalp generally isn't a good idea unless you have super duper dry skin.
You may also benefit from using a clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks to remove build-up. Or perhaps check your conditioner. Perhaps it has a lot of silicones in it (words that end in "...cone"). These tend to build up, requiring clarifying.

I think I'm suffering from this a little at the moment, though rather than buying a specific clarrifing shampoo, I normally just switch to another brand for a couple of washes, I find that for the most part another shampoo normally cleans the gunk of another, but never cleans the gunk of itself.
If things get really bad I'll wash my hair with liquid soap (Sannex) that really strips the hair back to basics... Plenty of conditioner then follows.

Soap...ARRGH! Clarify with a rinse of 1/4 cup vinegar in 1 liter of warm water before you wash, or occasionally treat your hair with a blend of oils containing a light essential oil, such as citrus oil, which cuts right through the non-soluble gunk.
Actually, soap-based shampoos are not unheard of. Aubrey Organics has a whole line of them. They don't work for me, but I know of some who swear by them. I also know of some who never use shampoo or soap on their hair. One women with gorgeous hair uses a clay-based mixture she creates, and another woman uses just a bit of shampoo with mostly apple juice and mayonnaise, but her hair texture is the opposite of mine.
Interesting, to say the least...

Its probably genetics that allows certain people to practice crazy or rather unusual methods and get results. Similar with skin care, most people use special cleansers sometimes moisturisers, treatments etc, then there are those few that use a bar of cheap soap only or even just water and have flawless skin. I think it really depends on how resiliant your body is - good genetics.
