I dunno about everyone else, but does anyone else find long hair really hot in the summer. At the moment, I'm just not comfortable unless its tied back in a ponytail.
Having longhair is like wearing a wooly hat in summer... scorching!!
Anyone else find the same? Any significant difference between shoulder length and longer hair?
Yeah, it's definitely hotter than having shorter hair. Your head seems to emenate the most heat than any other body part. Naturally, if your head is covered (such as with hair) than less heat will be released. Tie it back and you'll probably be much cooler.
Wool hats and clothing in the middle of the summer isn't bad after you get used to it. Re-enactors may be really off in the head what with running very fast in the middle of August shooting hot black powder from burning hot gun barrels wearing long flannel underwear, wool socks, long wool pants, a flannel shirt and a long sleeve wool coat along with a wool hat but damned if we don't stand up do it.
I never noticed it being THAT hot.. :/
That's why I re-timed my pursuit of long hair. Last year I was pre-awkward phase when it got really hot and humid. I couldn't tie it in a tail and it kept falling in my face and causing me to sweat horribly. So I ended up having it trimmed.
My hair is long enough now, so I can tie it back in a tail and the heat doesn't bother me a bit. I'm in air conditioning most of the day or on my motorcycle. That probably helps too.
I have had long hair for a few years, and I'm sure many on this post have had theirs for many more. I don't notice the heat difference anymore, it's been quite a while since I COULD notice the difference. My advice: suffer one summer and then see what happens next summer. you probably won't notice it.
Oh, and this post applies to seasonal weather. If you live somewhere that is always hot, I have no experience with that. Sorry.
Good luck.
It would be nice to have some heat rather than rain to be troubled.....
More seriously in any hot or humid climate hair is best worn up or at least brushed back. The comfort is that in winter you don't need a hat unlike those with short hair!
I know what you mean...I usually wear my hair in a ponytail mostly when it's really hot during the day...
I just hope you are not thinking about cutting your hair!
No not at all, no cutting... just complaining...
Well good! You should just let it grow longer! :o)
Looks great!
Its normal on just regular summer days, but on those scorchers it really is quite unbearable and tying my hair in a high up pony tail is the only solution for me.
When I was in London a week ago (well, I came home a week ago) it was insanely hot, but I didn't really mind the hair. It was the rest of my body that was uncomfortable and sweaty.
...than a tail. Especially when segmented ties are used (because then
the hair does not even touch the neck!)
With all my hair pulled back into a tail. I have never been cooler
in my entire life.
New England humidity can be CUT WITH A KNIFE...
but I am cool even when my short-haired friends are HOT
and still have to brush their hair off of their foreheads!
Well I hope you've been wearing good waterproofs the past week or so - my parents are just back from New England and said there was like 2 hurricanes over there!
Hope the weather improves for you dude!
wolfeyes
but New England is a thousand miles to the north, thank God!
...do you live in New England? If so, what state? I only ask because I used to live in CT.
yeah having long hair in intense heat kind of sucks, but having short hair in intense heat kind of sucks too. intense heat is uncomfortable whatever hairstyle you have.
Definately know what you mean!
You know the problems I've had recently with my skin, and the heat really worsens my skin, so I prefer to be a nice 19 degrees centrigrade - even bought an air conditioner for my room (something virtually unheard of over here).
It's bothered me a little, especially last weekend as I was very active, and spent a day in racing competition and a day in combat training (carrying with me an 8kg weapon and a 20kg pack). Afterwards my skin was really starting to get in a state and it's taken from Saturday til today just to get it back under control - think I'll have to ease up on the physical stuff til autumn or winter (when I tend to walk about in a t-shirt and get stared at lots)

In the UK, we tend to get moist heat, not dry heat/air, so everything's just humid and horrible. When I was out in Spain, the heat was much more intense, but dry instead of moist. As for the ponytail, not there yet, but I'm working on my topknot :)
Hey man,
Just wondered if you have progress pics for this month???
You're one of the ones I wait to see each month - especially since you're the only growing bud that's never chickened out on me :)
Keep it up man!
wolfeyes
Really, LOL, wow thanks, a fan?!:)
Yea, I decided my last proper update which Is howed the length was at 7 months in, or end of June. I made a tiny update at 7 1/2 months, but didn't show the length, just a style. I just wanted to leave it to 9 months this time to really see the length. I promise, on the 26th this month, there'll be a 9 month update progress pic, or 4:)
Yeah - I look forward to your progress pics too. In fact I was worried we'd lost you when we didn't get an 8th month pic.
You and Wolfeyes are both in the same crop, cos you both started growing at a similiar time. (Bit like me, Gaz (Ghosts Cloak) & Aaron). You need your running mates... :-)
What?!!! No way!!! Definately not. Maybe while I was away on holiday for a week people might have become suspicious but I checked the hyperboard once or twice as my hotel had internet access! I wouldn't leave you guys!
Haha yea, and we both have the same growth rates, although wolfy always grows a little bit faster. When I see wolfeyes's progress pics every month, I know that whatever milestone he's reached, I'm nearly there and often reach it in only a fortnight!
I feel the exact same way!
Keep it tied back.
I'm in CA, and I've been having temps in the 100's lately! They said it was supposed to 'cool' down to the lower 90's by the end of the week, though! I always wear my hair in a tail, too. Looking forward to Fall.
Actually, I find long hair down in the heat is more like wearing a wool scarf and/or shawl than like a hat.
Someone once remarked to me that "that hair keeps your neck from getting red". I think he might have meant it both literally and figuratively.
Yep, if it's loose you will sweat, especially here in the hot, humid Washington DC Summer. The ponytail does indeed help alot.
And, even with a tail I still get redneck protection because of the way it poofs out and stuff. I am probably only a little hotter than I would be without the hair. In these humid environments, you are going to get sticky no matter what. You might as well look your best, and since everybody around here sets the A/C on "Arctic Blast" it is actually quite comfortable to wear it loose indoors.
It's 95 degrees F right now in my house. The indoor temperature will reach this pretty much every day during the summer.
I'm used to heat and don't mind it. I don't remember what it's like to have short hair during the summer.
However, heat gives my computers a very tough time...

Our air conditioning doesn't work, so it's probably about 87 in here right now, and probably 90% humidity. The only thing that really irritates me is when I sit on the sofa my hair makes my back hot. A ponytail wouldn't really fix that.
Hi Sorted-
I am one of those that can't stand the heat..............at least 85-115 degrees. The Long Hair when the temp. reaches these figures drives me nuts if I leave my hair down, and yes............makes me feel extra hot as the hair clings to the skin. But, as in the case of Luckskind, wearing the Ponytail as does he eliminates the uncompfort just great. This is what I do, and have been doing lately and it is the complete answer to the "heat" problem which is present when wearing the hair down, Otherwise, in my case having long hair doesn't seem to phase me anymore than shorter hair when it comes to the viscious hot days. If it is terrifically hot, I can't stand it no matter what.
Justin
I just arrived in LA from Bangkok (both pretty scourging hot, Bangkok being hotter) two days ago and I have to say I prefer hot weather to cold weather, with long hair and all. I will take hot humidity and hot aridity over cold any day. I feel like my hair dries out very quickly in the cold and gets very static-y.
And I guess the heat doesn't bother me 'cause I'm used to it... And I agree that having long hair is like wearing a wooly hat in the summer, but I wonder if anyone else has noticed this: having long hair DOES NOT feel like wearing a wooly hat in the WINTER 'cause your head is still pretty darn cold. Such a crappy hat our hair is.
Love,
Kiat T.
I find long hair very versatile. When in the summer heat I wear it loose as it stops me getting sunburned, but the best way to keep cool is to wash it and let it dry. Longer hair takes a while to dry and that in itself keeps you cool.
I find that getting my hair wet with water helps me stay cool in warm weather. I think part of the purpose of long hair is to keep warm (dry) in winter and keep cool (wet) in summer.
