Maybe its just me, but I find that my hair is actually easier to maintain when I wear it down instead of in a ponytail, because when i put it up in a ponytail it looks good for about 5 minutes, and then an hour later I look like I havent washed it in weeks because of hairs coming out, etc. but then I take it out of the ponytail, fluff it out and it looks good again for the whole day. Is that uncommon?
I've found that during the day I have to take my hair out of the tail, brush it, then put it back. Just normal motion during the day causes it to loosen up and get frazzled. Seems normal to me.
You know, the problem with the ponytail (although that's how I wear mine 95% of the time. But there is the problem with hair coming off... I do feel like I look like wreck when loose strands start to come out especially when I like to wear it quite snug (but not taut) and hair's NOT supposed to slip out. Yet it still does. But unlike you, I can't just let it down and have it looking good for the rest of the day 'cause there'll be this funny 'ridge' in my hair... So to answer your question: YES, it's uncommon! How do you get the little wave your hair gets from tying it up to go away?

Kiat T.
Well my job requires me to keep it up in a ponytail alot and so I get alot of ponytail waves in my hair, but I really don't mind them, I think they look nice, the sort-of Sailor Neptune look.
1. wait till the hair is completely dry before ponytailing
2. try a wider ponytail band.
I've been using a soft "flat" ponytail holder, rather than the narrow, cylindrical ones. What little dent I have in my hair goes away after brushing. The cylindrical ones (made by "Goody") created a more durable indentation.
...this has a lot to do with a person's hair type and length. My hair is fairly thick and wavy, so my hair is quite difficult when down most of the time, although I do have some "good hair days". I do get the frizzy's when I wear a tail, but I've been using, with great success, L'Oreal's Smooth-Intense Anti-Frizz Serum. In fact, I think I need some right now! :)
I have to wear my hair up every day. If I leave it down and there is even the slightest breeze, I just end up with a massive tangled frizz ball. What works best for me is a braid or a bun. In these styles, my hair doesn't have a chance to get tangled.
Same for me, and my hair is nearly to my shoulder blades! I'll probably have to grow it to my knees before it sits straight!
Mine is to my waist and still doesn't "sit straight".
Lol, if that happens to me, I'll probably go for the Yul Brynner look. Don't think I could handle it if there was no end in sight to my hair's misbehaviour!
Why not try smoothing some sort of product over the outer of your pony. You could rub a little tigi catfight or gel/wax over your palms then smooth it over... or something similar thats alcohol free... so it wont dry out your hair. Or a smoothing cream, biosilk so one I think if ur in the USA lots to choose from really.
