I used to have shoulder to mid back length hair for years until about 10 years ago when I got a buzzcut. Eventually I shaved my head and have been bald for a while. I'm 42 and at this point, many would just stay bald. My hair is graying and receding and most men keep the same hairstyle once they reach a certain age. If I let my hair grow long again, it certainly would be different this time. It would be receded in the front, thinning on top, and graying. But, I do have a major desire to let it grow. Just curious if anyone on the board has experienced this and would you become a longhair again or would you leave it in the past and stay bald?
I would go with what you want to do, and not bother that you'll look different from the last time.
There are several of us at 40+ on this board who do not have as much hair on to as we used to, but what the hell! - you are only (relatively) young once. Go for it.
And if you change your mind, the remedy is easy.
As bte said, the remedy is easy, so what do you have to lose by giving long hair another chance? Despite your recession and thinning, long hair can still look great. If you look at the pictures of the wrestling guy that I posted a couple days ago (in the thread 'Thinning Longhair Styles'), you'll see that his hair looks brilliant. It's only my opinion, but long hair on men who are 40+ and are thinning looks smarter than a full head of hair.
Good luck with whatever you choose.
Matt.

I had long hair -- mid back -- for a number of years before shaving it. I stayed shaved / buzzed for a couple years and have grown it back over the past two years... from shaved. It's definitely thinner on top and getting grey, but I like it and that's what matters. Go for it.
...I'm sorry to hear about those issues. Although I am not personally going through what you are, there is a really nice guy here that actually has a completely receded hairline. I believe it might have been a "Marc A." or something like that. Anyway, he grew out his hair in the back and uses a hair piece on top to make up for the hair loss. I commend him for his efforts and his courage to post pictures of what he's done, both before and after photos. So, it can be done where there is a will.
As far as the greying, there are many guys here who have grey hair and look great, and are not bothered at all by the grey. Bill is one of them...another great guy and moderator here. Maybe he could post an update pic (haven't seen one in a bit).
This is a great board for support and getting answers. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide. Keep us posted.
I say go for it, no question. When I see older guys (although I don't consider to 42 to be old at all) with long hair, they seem to look more free and enjoying themselves, regardless of whether they have a full head of hair or lots of receding.
