I tried the hot oil treatment because I had heard such great things about it. It seems to have the opposite effect than I hoped. My hair seems very dry and looks like I've been rolling around in the haystack. My hair has never looked this bad, oh.. and I'm in the worst part of the akward stage. I know I know, HANG IN THERE.. I'm just venting..

Myself and other guys on this board have (over time) voiced our low opinions of hot oil treatments. Too bad you didn't catch one of these posts.
I see a lot of new guys wanting to try everything they hear about and these hot oil treatments are promoted pretty heavily by the cheap/low quality brands of hair product companies.
It's ok to believe what some of the guys here who have had long hair for a long time have to say about stuff like this. Everybody's hair on this board seems to be different but a rule of thumb to remember when it comes to special "deep" treatments is that you are trying to get moisture back into your hair and coating it with hot oil isn't going to do that. Oil and water are two different substances.
Most "hot oil" products contain little or no oil. I've never had any problem using real oils, like coconut oil.
I figured that someone would bring up their favorite oil like Jojoba (or coconut) but like you mentioned, hot "oil" treatments are not the same thing as these other natural oils.
don't take risks with your health (including the health of your hair) for style!
hope you can get your hair back to a state you like, and... hang in there! It's not that hard to go through the awkward stage when you don't think about it all the time!
good luck

That's true. Currently my hair is fine most of the time, except in the neck, but since I rarely see my neck I just pretend it's alright and don't give it a second thought.
Thanks for the words of wisdom, I'm learning =)
