HI Katherine-
You seem to have such in-depth knowledge about hair and perhaps (if possible) you could state the pros and cons as you see them in regards to Jojoba Oil use verses Hot Oil treatments? Which in your opinion is the better route to take?
No need to post anything if you feel you are being put on the spot by my question.
All the best-
Justin
These two are not equivalent, you know.
Jojoba is generally applied by the drop to the length of your dry or wet hair, although it may be blended with other oils, for that same purpose or as a hot oil treatment.
Last week I looked at a number of "hot oil" products at the drugstore, and saw (from reading the ingredients listing) that none of the ones I was looking at contained oil. They seemed to be made up of an array of chemicals similar to what conditioners contain. I've never used them myself, but was surprised to read on this board that people have had bad luck with them. You learn something new every day.
I think the reason for these treatments is that they're supposed to give you the same effect as oil, but as you apply them after a shampoo, not before, the excess will rinse out. This is unlike true oil, which needs to be thoroughly washed out to prevent greasy hair.
I prefer to oil treat with natural oils, like coconut, macadamia, sweet almond, with some volatile essential oil like citrus to cut through product buildup, then wash out with a light conditioner like Suave Daily Clarifying conditioner (diluted with water). Olive oil is heavy and sticky, some people have trouble washing it out of their hair.
To heat treat after washing: I recently discovered that the Hollywood Beauty people have come out with a Carrot Oil treatment that's mildly scented (unlike some women's treatments I would not recommend to guys). You can buy it in the African-American hair care section of your drugstore, where you'll also find lots of extreme products for seriously damaged hair.
Or you can use any conditioner whose instructions say it can be used that way. See if it works for you.
Thanks Katherine so much for your most in-depth findings of these two seperate items. Very much appreciated. Guess I must be one of only a few who has had the greatest success with the Hot Oil. There is a "passable" photo of my hair a little ways down the column from here which was put on yesterday. The back view shows best what the Hot Oil results have created, because prior to this my hair never looked as well as it does now.
Again, many many thanks.
Justin~
Hot oil treatment are totally different to jojoba oil, jojoba is a liquid wax used as a hair lubricant after washing etc to 'seal' in moisture or to prevent static. Hot oils are oil based conditioners which have emulsifiers which make them wash out easier on contact with water. They sometimes have protien in them too I know vo5 does a 1min reconstructing one.. I have it in my bathroom.. somewhere :-/ Also hot oils are pre-shampoo treatments whilst jojoba is after conditioning.
As Katherine mentioned, I have been using Carrot Oil. It is actually a blend of several oils besides carrot. It gives the hair a healthy feel and shine, without feeling greasy.
The bottle only cost about $3 so you could easily give it a try.
