Ive read many explanations on why Metallca cut their hair, but still have not found a definite reason. They say change was in order but all of them are trying to grow it back. Like most people I wish they woulda never have cut it, they didn't seem the same afterwords.
At the time, they must have wanted a change. Change is a natural part of being a human being, and an artist, at that. Maybe the need for change has arisen again lately and they want to grow it *back*. If they do, they do... If they don't they don't. It's a lot simpler than "We want to sell records" or whatever, which is the reason with which they are painted as concerns why they got haircuts.
Just a rant.
After the Napster stunt, suing their own fans (who bought their material, by the way), suing furniture stores (because the name was too close to "Metallica"), etc, etc, who really cares about this lame excuse for a band anymore?
I don't.
As far as I'm concerned, they can just go away. They're a sinking ship. It took forever to find a bassist to replace Newsted, who left because of how Metallica was treating their fans and how they'd become lawsuit happy. The former bass player for Alice In Chains turned Metallica down at least three times, as did many other prominent bassists.
Their latest album didn't meet the band's expectations for sales, and ticket sales are way off. At most venues, they've been giving away some cheesy CD thing in hopes of selling more tickets. They have yet to officially sell out a single date on this tour.
With any luck, these posers will pack their bags and quit. Kirk Hammet deserves better than being stuck with a guy like Lars Ulrich. And James Hetfield is no better.
Cmon now their early music ROCKS. There is so much of it that to me it NEVER gets old. I agree they maybe washed up now but really has hardly an effect if they make more albums or not.
And speaking of their concerts Trust me they ALL sell out. It is nearly impossible to find tix on day of the concert without having to resort to scalpers and pay ridiculous prices. People still go to hear the old stuff!
I'm not saying their music doesn't rock. A lot of it is actually pretty good. They have a number of songs I liked. "Sad But True" was once once of my favorite songs. These days, however, I won't listen to them at all. If a Metallica song comes on the radio, I change the station. I sold all of my Metallica stuff. I have no more CDs, videos, DVDs, anything.
Regarding ticket sales, I can tell you that not a single show on the current tour has sold out. I recently moved from Kansas City. Up there, ticket sales were so slow that they packaged a CD of Metallica stuff that was free with the purchase of a ticket. When that didn't jump start sales, they had a buy one, get one free offer for an entire weekend. Still didn't work. A friend of mine who won tickets told me the entire upper deck of Kemper Arena was empty.
I live in Austin, Texas now. The band will be here soon. Tickets still available even though they've been on sale for months. You can log on and still get decent seats. Sure, the best seats are gone, but there are plenty left! A few years ago this band sold out in a hurry. These days, you can get a ticket on the day of the show.
Godsmack would be doing themselves a favor if they chose to do their own tour instead of playing with those posers. I know several people who would have seen Godsmack, but like me refused to buy tickets because it would make Selloutica some money.
Tickets are still available at all remaining shows on this tour.
There are few bands out there that deserve not to have a fan base, and Metallica is one of them.
I know that when I saw them here in Denmark last year, there were 70000 visitors. This was at a festival, so there may have been some that wouldn't have gone otherwise (me, for instance) but they played a really great set. 2 (or was it 3, my memory is leaky) hours, of which only two songs were from St. Anger, and none from (re)load.
That was a really good show, and I doubt there could've been much more people.
I just checked with Ticketmaster to see availability of tix for upcoming shows. The October 9 show at Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York still has lower level floor seats available. They haven't even sold enough seats to get to the second level yet.
Tonight's show is general admission, 15 ticket limit, and you can buy 15 if you want. Plenty of seats available.
Every show I checked had numerous seats, almost all good seats still available.
That doesn't sound like sold out shows to me.
I meant to include a disclaimer saying you propably were right about their US tour, I'm just saying that in Denmark last year the show was packed.
And they played this year again, and the tix were sold out way in advance.
Well I agree they are capitalist scum now, but I still listen to them, and still go to see them in concert.
Lars always was an asshole, and to be honest I think James just went along with the whole lawsuits thing.
However, I still love the music and download it as I don't want to support them financially. I still play their music in my band as well.
In concert, I love the way james can work the crowd, and most of all I love cute wee Kirk - he's just so timid and quiet and seems really dead on (belfast talk there).
Not fussed on lots of their new stuff, but will still listen to it occasionally. I don't really want to pick a side, as I understand people who feel either way on the subject.
But if I like music, I listen to it... and I do like plently of their stuff.

PS
I still feel a little sentimental about them, since they were a big part of my youth, which is probably another reason I still listen to them, even though my tastes are less 'metal' these days and more 'grunge-esqe'.
They pro'lly wanted a change after all those years. These past few years really short hair has been in style. My hair stylist told me long hair is coming back into style. Everything happens in circles/cycles.
Their metal has gone to the dogs.
They are just a lame excuse for a nu metal band, they've become too popular for their own good, they can't handle it.
The old material performed LIVE was fairly good, but now I see so many people into nu metal, it just makes me sick.
So I don't care anymore.
I never liked them, but it's more to do with the fact that they only care about money, and that they're (in my view) capitalist scum.
Anyway, there are many bands with better hair than them
